So far, 76 of those troops have returned to duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Defense Department is steadfast in its efforts to deliver programs and services intended to lead to the best possible outcomes for our service members,\u201d Pentagon spokesperson Alyssa Farah said in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are grateful to the efforts of our medical professionals who have worked diligently to ensure the appropriate level of care for our service members, which has enabled nearly 70 percent of those diagnosed to return to duty,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We must continue to address physical and mental health together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon stressed that numbers could change, noting the 109 cases are a \u201csnapshot in time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reuters was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-pentagon-tbi-exclusive\/exclusive-more-than-100-u-s-troops-diagnosed-with-brain-injuries-from-iran-attack-officials-idUSKBN2041ZK\" target=_blank>first to report<\/a> the increase in injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Pentagon officials initially said that no \u201ccasualties\u201d resulted from the attack, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/17\/11-troops-injured-after-irans-strike-against-al-asad-airbase-says-centcom\/\" target=_blank>Pentagon started backtracking<\/a> on Jan. 16 and said 11 service members were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/01\/29\/50-service-members-diagnosed-with-tbi-following-iran-ballistic-missile-attack\/\" target=_blank>injured<\/a> following the strike at al-Asad airbase in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That number has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/24\/34-troops-suffered-traumatic-brain-injuries-in-iranian-rocket-attack-according-to-pentagon-update\/\" target=_blank>continued to climb<\/a> in a series of updates, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/30\/secdef-says-he-personally-briefed-trump-on-the-seriousness-of-tbi\/\" target=_blank>Pentagon last said 64 service members<\/a> were diagnosed with mild TBI in connection with the attack on Jan. 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tehran\u2019s attack targeting al-Asad aibase \u2014 where roughly 1,000 U.S. troops are stationed \u2014 came after the U.S. conducted a strike that killed Iran\u2019s Quds Force Commander Quassem Soleimani on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secretary of Defense Mark Esper initially said that more than 10 ballistic missiles hit al-Asad during the strike, damaging tentage, a parking lot and other equipment. Even so, he characterized the aftermath as nothing \u201cmajor\u201d at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, Army Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, predicted that Iran\u2019s intent was to kill Americans on Jan. 8, and later disclosed Iran\u2019s missiles were lethal 1,000- to 2,000-pound munitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese things have bursting radiuses of 50 to 100 feet, and that\u2019s just the shrapnel in the actual blast. These are very, very significant, serious weapons,\u201d Milley said Jan 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd you know, if you\u2019re within a certain range of that thing, there\u2019s no helmet or anything else that\u2019s going to save you,\u201d Milley added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Pentagon has issued new TBI estimates, the Defense Department has noted that TBI symptoms like headaches and dizziness do not immediately appear, and argued that the Pentagon has been forthcoming about TBI cases stemming from Tehran\u2019s attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of these symptoms, they are late developing,\u201d Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman said Jan. 28. \u201cThey manifest over a period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although President Donald Trump took some heat for characterizing the TBI as \u201cnot serious\u201d and simply headaches, his rhetoric though is not out of line with Pentagon vernacular. Milley also said that the Pentagon\u2019s injury reporting systems is broken down into three categories: very serious, serious and not serious. He added that mild TBI is categorized as a mild injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s not to minimize or dismiss or anything, that\u2019s just to say that\u2019s how we categorize injuries,\u201d Milley said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Trump\u2019s remarks on the issue, Esper said he personally briefed Trump on the gravity of the injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve had the chance to speak with the president. He is very concerned about the health and welfare of all of our service members \u2014 particularly those who were involved in the operations in Iraq,\u201d Esper said. \u201cAnd he understands the nature of these injuries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In total, more than 408,000 cases of traumatic brain injuries in service members have been reported since
