But the noisy, attention-getting demonstration also has become a victim of its own success.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/gallery\/2018\/05\/27\/thousands-join-rolling-thunder-ride-through-dc\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is what it&#8217;s like when Rolling Thunder invades Washington<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pete Zaleski, vice president of Rolling Thunder Inc., said costs for security and clean-up of the event have swelled to more than $200,000, an expense the group cannot continue to sustain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt really has exploded to beyond what we can support,\u201d he told Military Times. \u201cThese costs didn\u2019t exist 10 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zaleski said the size of the crowd both participating and watching have prompted additional security concerns at the Pentagon, where the annual ride typically starts. That has prompted several new costs and conflicts with local officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe still have 90 chapters in 33 states, and we\u2019re going to help them coordinate their own rides on a smaller scale,\u201d Zaleski said. \u201cThe group is not going under, and our message is not going away. We\u2019re just not going to be doing it in Washington anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the loss of one of the most public and recognizable national Memorial Day commemorations drew disappointment from members of the veterans community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese demonstrations and Rolling Thunder&#8217;s unbelievable work over the past 32-plus years has made a tremendous impact, keeping the search going for our missing and prisoners of war,\u201d said Joe Chennelly, national executive director of AMVETS. \u201cWe as an organization are grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/military-honor\/vietnam-vets-rolling-thunder\/2017\/05\/26\/rolling-thunder-turns-30-the-iconic-ride-through-the-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rolling-thunder.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Rolling Thunder turns 30: The iconic ride through the years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some highlights of the demonstration that will rumble through Washington, D.C. this weekend.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chennelly called the group\u2019s work \u201ctoo important to our veterans, and really to all Americans, to simply let it stop.\u201d His organization is looking at ways to support the Rolling Thunder chapters moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zaleski said he hopes the announcement of the end of the tradition will bring even more attention to the event\u2019s message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen word gets out that this is the last one, it\u2019s going to draw even more people,\u201d he said. \u201cThe next ride ought to be huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final ride is scheduled for May 26, 2019.
