{"id":54549,"date":"2022-06-29T13:06:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T13:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/29\/no-plans-to-increase-abortion-services-at-va-after-supreme-court-ruling\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:37:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:37:57","slug":"no-plans-to-increase-abortion-services-at-va-after-supreme-court-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2022\/06\/29\/no-plans-to-increase-abortion-services-at-va-after-supreme-court-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"No plans to increase abortion services at VA after Supreme Court ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/06\/27\/overdue-veterans-disability-claims-down-almost-a-quarter-in-last-four-months\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs leaders<\/a> are vowing to continue \u201cproviding reproductive health care\u201d to patients in the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/28\/abortions-are-rarely-performed-by-military-clinics-data-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\">Supreme Court\u2019s decision on abortion last week<\/a>, but that won\u2019t mean providing any new services or travel assistance to help women get the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement issued just hours after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/06\/27\/army-chaplains-pro-life-victory-email-to-brigade-sparks-inquiry\/\" target=\"_blank\">court overturned the long-standing Roe vs. Wade decision<\/a> \u2014 which legalized abortion across America \u2014 VA Secretary Denis McDonough said that officials at the department were looking into what the decision would mean for individuals who use VA medical facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAccess to gender-specific reproductive health services, including contraception and fertility services, is and will remain a critical component of veteran health care,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Department of Veterans Affairs delivery of reproductive health care operations continues consistent with our federal legal authority, despite today\u2019s Supreme Court decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/06\/28\/dod-looks-to-protect-troops-civilian-employees-from-prosecution-over-new-abortion-laws\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2021-12-08-at-2.10.26-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD looks to protect troops, civilian employees from prosecution over new abortion laws<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Justice Department generally shields federal employees whose work might violate state laws.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But VA officials clarified this week that \u201cconsistent with regulation, VA does not provide abortion services or travel assistance related to abortion procedures.\u201d There are no current plans to change or challenge that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department also does not provide any \u201cabortion counseling\u201d services through its medical centers. Officials did not say whether VA physicians may update information about available services in light of the recent developments, particularly in states where the procedure is now outlawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 18 states have full or partial bans on abortions following the latest Supreme Court ruling. Democratic lawmakers have pressured administration officials to find ways to improve access to the procedure for women in those states, even if it means providing help for them to cross state lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That issue has been particularly problematic when it comes to members of the military, who may be stationed in states where abortions are illegal and may have their freedom to travel elsewhere restricted because of service obligations. Defense Department officials have said they are looking into the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/06\/28\/abortions-are-rarely-performed-by-military-clinics-data-shows\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/pregnant-woman-gettyimages-150973587-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Abortions are rarely performed by military clinics, data shows<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Military hospitals performed fewer than 100 abortions between 2016 and 2021.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several Democratic lawmakers have suggested in recent days that President Joe Biden could use federal land and federal facilities to allow abortion providers to work in regions where state officials have outlawed the procedure. That idea could include VA hospitals and clinics, found in every state across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, on Tuesday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said administration officials see \u201cdangerous ramifications\u201d for such a plan, and are not currently pursuing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his statement last week, McDonough said VA staff would be available to assist with related stress and anxiety caused by the Supreme Court ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe recognize that this may be an emotional time for veterans, families and our employees alike,\u201d he said. \u201cWe must remember to support and respect each other as we continue to focus on veterans and their
