Pentagon may rename US Pacific Command"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon may soon be announcing a new name for its largest area of operations, with a change to Indo-Pacific Command to \u201cbetter encapsulate the responsibilities the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/17\/us-navy-still-living-with-the-effects-of-collisions-even-as-it-adds-milius-to-7th-fleet\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">command <\/a>currently has,\u201d Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Rob Manning said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unexpected discussion that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/07\/28\/pacom-commander-3-major-threats-challenge-the-pacific\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover91733\">U.S. Pacific Command<\/a> may be getting re-named came after a reporter\u2019s question at a briefing Monday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to ask about the change of name from Pacific Command to Indo-Pacific Command,\u201d the reporter said. \u201cAside from changing signs, what implications would it have?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no announcement on the change of Pacific Command,\u201d Manning said. \u201cWhat I will tell you is, that as you know, the significance of any name change is to better characterize the responsibility.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/04\/23\/incoming-us-pacific-command-chief-wants-to-increase-presence-near-china-isr-capabilities\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18048374786881.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Incoming US Pacific Command chief wants to increase presence near China<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Due to the distances involved in the Indo-Pacific, Adm. Philip Davidson stressed that the U.S. cannot solely rely on surge forces from the continental United States to deter Chinese aggression.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress is pushing for increased focus on China\u2019s activities in the Indo-Pacific and the 2019 defense bill includes several provisions to counter Chinese influence there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The House Armed Services Committee, in a 15-page summary of its 2019 defense bill, emphasized funding for \u201cDoD\u2019s\tefforts\tto\tplan for\tand\tprovide\tthe\tnecessary\tforces\tand\tmilitary infrastructure,\tand\tlogistics\tcapabilities,\tin\tthe\tregion\tthrough\tthe\tIndo-Pacific\tStability Initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill also calls for enhanced \u201cmaritime\tsecurity\tand\tmaritime\tdomain\tawareness\tin\tthe South\tChina\tSea\tand\tIndian\tOcean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In follow-up questions, Manning added that a potential name change would not change the command\u2019s responsibilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSame AOR, same responsibilities,\u201d Manning said. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs you look at titles and unit designations, organizations, the name of an organization should encapsulate their responsibility and so certainly that\u2019s a consideration.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll follow up with you if a decision is made on that,\u201d Manning said of the renaming. \u201cLet me check the status and figure out if that is something under consideration in the first place.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2619828.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-90912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2619828.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2619828.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2619828.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2619828.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">U.S. Navy Adm.
