Col. Samuel Kan, executive director\u00a0of the Armed Forces Tax Council.\u00a0&#8220;We don&#8217;t want people to unnecessarily\u00a0spend money to get their taxes done\u00a0when they can get their  <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/uac\/newsroom\/free-tax-help-for-military-families\" target=\"_blank\">taxes done for\u00a0free<\/a> by people who are trained up.&#8221; <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there&#8217;s a quality reviewer\u00a0who checks the tax preparer&#8217;s work,\u00a0Kan said: &#8220;The more eyes that see your\u00a0return, the more likely you&#8217;ll catch mistakes,&#8221;\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>The tax centers will also file the taxes\u00a0electronically for free.\u00a0 <br\/> <br\/>Through the services&#8217; legal community,\u00a0tax preparers on military installations\u00a0are trained through the Internal Revenue\u00a0Service&#8217;s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance,\u00a0or VITA, program.  <br\/> <br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These military\u00a0tax preparers are also very familiar with\u00a0tax exclusions and other situations specific\u00a0to the military, such as combat zone\u00a0tax exclusions.\u00a0They\u2019re also used to filing multiple\u00a0state tax returns, which is often the case\u00a0for military couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;If the person who is preparing their\u00a0taxes doesn&#8217;t know an answer to a\u00a0question, there&#8217;s a significant chain of\u00a0command that [the preparer] can use,&#8221;\u00a0Kan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>That includes representatives from\u00a0each of the service branches who sit on\u00a0the Armed Forces Tax Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>&#8220;If there are issues, it comes up to\u00a0us. We engage the IRS every day, and\u00a0if there are issues we addresses those\u00a0issues and resolve them,&#8221; he said. For\u00a0those in the military community, he said,\u00a0&#8220;there&#8217;s probably not a better source of\u00a0information than the military because we\u00a0have that direct link with the IRS and we\u00a0work hand in hand with them. \u2026 There&#8217;s\u00a0no reason to go to a paid tax center.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>There is no income requirement to\u00a0get your taxes done for free at a military\u00a0VITA tax center; civilian centers have\u00a0strict income limitations and other eligibility\u00a0requirements.\u00a0 <br\/> <br\/>You aren&#8217;t limited to the tax center at\u00a0the installation where you&#8217;re stationed. If\u00a0there are multiple bases in your area and\u00a0the tax center at your installation can&#8217;t\u00a0fit you in, or you live closer to a different\u00a0base, try there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Tax centers will help you regardless of\u00a0branch of service, and some will prepare\u00a0taxes for free for retirees, if they have\u00a0the manpower available.\u00a0If you want to prepare your taxes\u00a0yourself,  <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\/financial-and-legal\/taxes?content_id=281461\" target=\"_blank\">go through Military OneSource<\/a>\u00a0to get free tax software. You must be\u00a0eligible for the free Military OneSource\u00a0services \u2013 that covers active-duty troops,\u00a0Guard and Reserve members, and their<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">families.  <br\/> <br\/>Retirees and other veterans are\u00a0eligible for services under Military OneSource for up to 180 days after leaving<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Visit  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militaryonesource.mil\">www.militaryonesource.mil<\/a> or call\u00a0800-342-9647 for access to the software.\u00a0Through OneSource, you also have\u00a0access to free confidential tax consultation.\u00a0These MilTax experts can answer\u00a0any tax-related questions you may have\u00a0as you&#8217;re preparing your tax returns.
