{"id":55364,"date":"2021-05-12T21:42:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T21:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/12\/typical-military-things-that-might-make-you-cheugy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:40:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:40:56","slug":"typical-military-things-that-might-make-you-cheugy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2021\/05\/12\/typical-military-things-that-might-make-you-cheugy\/","title":{"rendered":"Typical military things that might make you \u2018cheugy\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proliferation of TikTok among Zoomers, likely to be the most prominent demographic of newly minted service members, has led to the birth of a new word to describe a person who still ascribes to trends that are outdated and trying too hard: \u201cCheugy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although most of the \u201ccheugy\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2021\/05\/cheugy-is-hard-to-define-but-easy-to-identify.html\" target=\"_blank\">rhetoric centers<\/a> on millennial women who still prominently display \u201cLive, Laugh, Love\u201d signs above their mantles and talk fervently about their Harry Potter houses, it turns out anyone can be \u201ccheugy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means you, too, military dudes. It won\u2019t be long now before Gen Z comes for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheuginess might seem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/29\/style\/cheugy.html\" target=\"_blank\">difficult to define<\/a>, because it\u2019s subtly different from terms like \u201cbasic\u201d or \u201cfaddish,\u201d which are less self-aware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless, here are some military guy trends you might want to avoid if you don\u2019t want to be labeled \u201ccringe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a bro-vet, for starters, is definitely cheugy. Dressing head-to-toe in veteran-owned apparel line clothing that answers the prompt \u201ctell me you\u2019re a veteran without telling me you\u2019re a veteran\u201d is one thing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/tmrw\/what-cheugy-here-are-10-ways-know-if-you-re-t217735\" target=\"_blank\">Graphic tees<\/a>, it turns out, are a very cheugy item. Another is the constant sporting of Oakleys, especially around the back of your neck when you\u2019re indoors. Seriously, just take them off. They clash with your equally cringe neckbeard anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your equivalent to the millennial woman\u2019s \u201cLive, Laugh, Love\u201d sign are those overly edited black-and-white gym Instagram photos shot from the neck down every week with motivational quotes from your favorite Navy SEAL\u2019s new book. Mega-cheugy. After all, one of the greatest tell-tale signs of cheuginess is the unironic use of clich\u00e9 hashtags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s probably more basic, but let\u2019s also add buying a Camaro, Mustang, or Charger in taxi-cab yellow or fire-engine red to the list of cheugy things. It\u2019s sad we have to say that calling your car your baby or financing any vehicle at 20-or-more percent is one the most unfortunate military stereotypes that has carried from generation to generation. Even worse is when you deck that car out with bumper stickers that say \u201cSemper Fi\u201d or \u201cHonk for Freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To go even deeper, bragging about how manly you are by making a big deal about the artisanal coffees you brew in the wilderness and using beard oils that are caveman approved might be a bit cheugy, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, a tenet of avoiding cheuginess appears to be \u201cnot caring what anyone else thinks.\u201d So I guess, if you truly love all the potentially cheugy things I listed, you could just live your life without worrying what Gen Z thinks. What a concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you can fight the Zoomers for your right to rock a \u201c1776\u2033 T-shirt and whip around in your lime green Corvette in the comment section of Facebook \u2014 but that would probably be the cheugiest thing of all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a military
