{"id":55816,"date":"2019-07-31T21:41:33","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T21:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/07\/31\/research-finds-veterans-earn-more-than-non-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:43:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:43:17","slug":"research-finds-veterans-earn-more-than-non-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/education-transition\/2019\/07\/31\/research-finds-veterans-earn-more-than-non-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Research finds veterans earn more than non-veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new study conducted by the University of Akron looked to see if there was a difference between wages earned by military veterans compared with non-veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/static.militarytimes.com\/assets\/pdfs\/1564602889.pdf\" target=_blank>study <\/a>found that military veterans earned higher wages, averaging nearly $26 an hour while non-veterans averaged just $21 an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00036846.2018.1527445\" target=_blank>The veteran wage differential<\/a>,\u201d looked at average wages of military veterans and non-veterans across the U.S. between 2005 and 2015. It was conducted by two University of Akron professors, Dr. Francesco Renna and Dr. Amanda Weinstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany people are surprised when I show them that veterans tend to have higher wages than non-veterans,&#8221; Weinstein said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/uakron.edu\/im\/news\/study-shows-u-s-veterans-earn-more-money-in-the-workplace-than-non-veterans\" target=_blank>statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2017\/07\/29\/report-young-vets-are-more-successful-than-their-civilian-peers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635850965639990730-gettyimages-493332203jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Report: Young vets are more successful than their civilian peers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Young veterans are better educated, better paid and better off than many of their civilian peers, which researchers believe could be due to their military service.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They associated the higher wages veterans earn to a number of factors, including the fact that veterans have higher levels of work experience, are often older and more likely to be married and have children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other factors may be the veterans population tends to choose to enter occupations and industries that require more education and higher skill sets, like engineering, health care and government, according to the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third main set of factors the study attributed to the higher wages were skills veterans gain in the military that set them up for success in the civilian world, such as greater cognitive and people skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2019\/06\/09\/your-2019-guide-to-military-pay-and-benefits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIL-Benefits-Intro.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Your 2019 guide to military pay and benefits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Maximizing the options available to you is essential to making the most out of your military career.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study looked only at wage and salary income from employment and did not consider the potential benefits veterans can earn, such as disability pay, G.I. Bill stipends, pensions or health care coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to their research, veterans could have increased their wages even more if they would choose to work in more high-paying cities with better business climates. They also found many veterans lose earning potential since the majority don\u2019t enter certain high-paying industries such as real estate, finance and insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a U.S. Air Force Academy graduate and Air Force veteran herself, Weinstein said she wanted to research this subject since she was in graduate school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe men and women that I had the opportunity to serve with in the military are highly skilled, dedicated, and hard-working,\u201d Weinstein said. \u201cThey have a
