That\u2019s the lowest daily reported total since Oct. 25, and a 60 percent drop in the last month alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>number of cases<\/a> reported by VA spiked to nearly 21,000 in mid-January, as virus levels rose to their highest rates of the nearly year-old pandemic across America. But as vaccine efforts have ramped up nationwide in recent weeks, virus levels have steadily dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/19\/for-va-where-veterans-live-is-a-bigger-factor-in-covid-vaccine-refusal-than-race\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20350563025309.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">For VA, where veterans live is a bigger factor in COVID vaccine refusal than race<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department has already distributed about 2 million vaccines doses in the last two months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials reported that about 227,000 patients have gotten the virus since March of last year. More than 28 million Americans have contracted coronavirus since the start of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA medical staff have administered more than 2.2 million vaccine doses since mid-December. Of that total, about 550,000 are veterans who have received both ends of the two-shot regimen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, acting VA Under Secretary for Health Richard Stone told members of the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee that the department typically administers about 140,000 doses each week, but federal officials have agreed to supply an extra 600,000 in early March to accelerate those efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with CNN later that day, VA Secretary Denis McDonough said he is pleased with the vaccination efforts so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s work to be done, to be certain, including in rural and highly rural areas,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re prioritizing that now with new, innovative efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department leaders expect to vaccinate about 7 million individuals in coming months, including all VA staff and veterans who qualify for department health care programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/24\/measure-would-allow-va-to-give-coronavirus-vaccine-to-any-veteran-and-most-caregivers\/\" target=_blank>House lawmakers introduced a bill<\/a> this week to allow the department to vaccinate all veterans in America who ask for assistance, and for all caregivers of veterans enrolled in department home-based and long-term care programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2021\/02\/24\/measure-would-allow-va-to-give-coronavirus-vaccine-to-any-veteran-and-most-caregivers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6492125.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Measure would allow VA to give coronavirus vaccine to any veteran and most caregivers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Currently, only veterans enrolled in VA medical care can get the vaccine through the department.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA leaders have signaled they would be open to doing that, if enough vaccine doses are supplied to the department by federal sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week was the first time in at least six months that the department reported no new burials at veterans cemeteries related to coronavirus-connected deaths. The department has recorded more than 6,000 such funerals. As of Friday morning, VA had totaled 10,428 deaths among patients from complications related to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nationwide, more than 500,000 Americans have died
