{"id":56235,"date":"2021-12-12T18:43:41","date_gmt":"2021-12-12T18:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/12\/deployed-guardsmans-stories-for-kids-become-childrens-book\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:07:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:07:55","slug":"deployed-guardsmans-stories-for-kids-become-childrens-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/12\/deployed-guardsmans-stories-for-kids-become-childrens-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Deployed Guardsman\u2019s stories for kids become children\u2019s book"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HELENA, Mont. \u2014 Helena Valley resident Fred Terry never aspired to be a published author, but he wound up becoming one after writing a children\u2019s book as a way to connect with his kids while deployed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2021\/07\/22\/montana-national-guard-mobilized-to-support-firefighting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army National Guard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His children\u2019s book, \u201cWhite Paw: Beyond the Gate,\u201d tells a slightly fictionalized version of what took place on the Terry family farm while Fred spent nine months deployed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/12\/07\/divided-lawmakers-weigh-future-of-guantanamo-bay-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guantanamo Bay Detention Center<\/a> in Cuba. It is told from the perspective of a puppy that lived on the farm after being birthed by one of the family dogs, Prancer the Pup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book is somewhat whimsical, as told to Fred by his children through their daily observations during his deployment. It features many talking animals like Mr. Magic, the family\u2019s old billy goat that lives on the farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fred said he kept a journal while deployed on various assignments with the Guard. While in Cuba, he decided he wanted to do something more to create, as he puts it, \u201ca record of my time away from my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t start off with plans to write a book. I always just keep a little journal to memorialize that time away from my kids,\u201d Fred told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/helenair.com\/news\/local\/helena-valley-veteran-wrote-a-childrens-book-while-deployed-as-a-way-to-connect-with\/article_0828379f-4797-5486-b948-84926563a67f.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\">Independent Record<\/a>. \u201cIt was really [his wife] Trish\u2019s idea. Every month on the 27th, the day I left on deployment, we\u2019d use Facetime and I would read a couple of chapters. It was a good way to connect with the kids through storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/08\/marine-vet-pens-childrens-book-to-help-military-families-cope-with-deployment-separation\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/048-Square-Childrens-Book-Mockup-COVERVAULT-1.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine vet pens children\u2019s book to help military families cope with deployment separation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&quot;I Will Come Back&quot; is for children experiencing the deployment of their parents.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Fred, reading chapters of the book every month was a good way to count down the time for the couple\u2019s five children: Kyara, Jobe, Elisha, Amariah and Anaiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt kind of became a party night for all of them,\u201d Fred said. \u201cThey\u2019d all gather around the TV or whatever and eat popcorn while I read to them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trish said the girls specifically would always giggle and laugh because they were in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Fred, the book and reading the story not only helped his children cope with his absence, but helped him handle his own homesickness while deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt really helped keep me engaged with what was going on at the farm,\u201d Fred said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fred began to realize that what started out as a pet project had grown into a full-length story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI came to this realization near the end that I kind of had a real book on my hands,\u201d Fred said. \u201cSo I talked with a woman at church who had published books before and she walked me through all the various options.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fred eventually settled on Kindle direct publishing for the book through Amazon. \u201cWhite Paw\u201d can be downloaded for Kindle, or a hard copy can be purchased on Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2464\" height=\"1640\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg 2464w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1022 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21344840676764.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1363 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2464px) 100vw, 2464px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fred Terry is seen holding his book &#8220;White Paw: Beyond the Gate&#8221; in his Helena Valley, Mont. area home on Nov. 16, 2021. Another member of Fred\u2019s Butte-based unit, Jon Poe of Billings, illustrated the book for him. Fred said this fortuitous partnership came to be after he saw some of Poe\u2019s doodles on notepads. Fred approached him and asked if he\u2019d be interested, and Poe was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poe initially did line drawings for the book, but wasn\u2019t personally happy with the turnout. He then decided to redo all of the illustrations in a water color style. According to Fred, most of the work the two did together took place while quarantined at various facilities, due to COVID-19, for around 50 days total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Fred, the book became of a source of camaraderie in the unit. While there was some teasing about it, there was also a lot of collective input as the project progressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The product of their labor is a 13-chapter, approximately 150-page book written by Fred that is illustrated in full color by Poe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this final product of having a published paperback book is somewhat superfluous to Fred. The goal was not to make money, although several copies have been sold at this point, but rather to form new bonds with his children during his deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reading over Facetime was a great way to count down the months, and Fred saved the final chapter to read to them when he arrived back home, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was Fred\u2019s third deployment in his 33 1\/2 years with the Guard. Currently, he works as a signal officer for the National Guard, ensuring that communications are working properly. He previously deployed to Afghanistan as a military police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Fred, the family has briefly floated the idea of Fred writing another book. This would again be a family affair with the kids providing input and Trish, who homeschools the children, helping out as editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI never even really thought about writing, but as I wrote I thought that I should take it more seriously,\u201d Fred said. \u201cIt really did kind of awake a bit of being an author in me. A new potential hobby. It also made me read books different. I have a more critical perspective on them now I see lots of little tricks and things that authors do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the family, this book served its purpose because it represents a time in the family\u2019s life when Fred was gone. He said there isn\u2019t anything really to mark his time in Afghanistan in the same way. Certainly not anything that allowed Fred and Trish to incorporate the lessons they want their children to learn as they grow older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prancer the Pup has moved on. He found his own farm to live on after a time, but many of the personified animals are still there on the Terry farm north of Helena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe one thing I\u2019d like people to take away from this is that for the families stuck at home, deployment is hard,\u201d Fred said. \u201cDo whatever you can for them, even if it\u2019s something small.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fred Terry isn\u2019t the only Montana veteran to contribute to the book.
