{"id":57020,"date":"2019-03-31T15:58:47","date_gmt":"2019-03-31T15:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/31\/why-iraqs-president-says-theres-no-serious-opposition-to-us-troops-in-his-country\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:49:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:49:19","slug":"why-iraqs-president-says-theres-no-serious-opposition-to-us-troops-in-his-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/flashpoints\/2019\/03\/31\/why-iraqs-president-says-theres-no-serious-opposition-to-us-troops-in-his-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Iraq\u2019s president says there\u2019s no serious opposition to US troops in his country"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BAGHDAD \u2014 Iraq\u2019s president said Friday he does not see any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/27\/iraqi-lawmakers-demand-us-withdraw-its-troops-after-trumps-surprise-visit-2\/\" target=_blank>\u201cserious\u201d opposition<\/a> to the presence of American forces in Iraq, provided they continue to be there specifically to assist Iraqi forces in the fight against the Islamic State group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barham Salih said there is \u201cgeneral consensus\u201d that Iraq needs continued collaboration with the forces, which he said can go on \u201cas long as it is necessary.\u201d He also warned that the threat from ISIS extremists is far from over, despite the announcement of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/03\/23\/us-allied-syrian-force-declares-victory-over-islamic-state\/\" target=_blank>the group\u2019s territorial defeat<\/a> in Syria last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salih spoke to The Associated Press in an exclusive interview in Baghdad on Friday, a day before traveling to Tunis to attend an annual Arab summit meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/27\/iraqi-lawmakers-demand-us-withdraw-its-troops-after-trumps-surprise-visit-2\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18360750787908.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Iraqi lawmakers demand US withdraw its troops after Trump\u2019s surprise visit<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Trump, making his first presidential visit to troops in a conflict zone, said he has no plans to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 5,200 troops are stationed in Iraq as part of a security agreement with the Iraqi government to advise, assist and support the country&#8217;s troops in the fight against the Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISIS overran large parts of Iraq in 2014 after Iraqi forces collapsed, and it proceeded to declare a self-styled caliphate over territory straddling Iraq and Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. forces, which had left Iraq in 2011 after invading in 2003, were invited back in 2014 to assist the fight against the group. Iraq declared victory over ISIS in late 2017 after a ruinous and bloody war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;They are here for the specific mission of empowering and enabling Iraqi forces in the fight against ISIS. Nothing else. (Khalid Mohammed\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iraqi detention centers and courts are already overwhelmed with ISIS suspects, and the country has recently begun repatriating ISIS militants detained in Syria. They include 13 French nationals who will be put on trial for crimes committed inside Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Salih said that although he is personally opposed to capital punishment, he would abide by the Iraqi laws and the constitution if the French nationals were to be handed the death sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the interview, Salih added that Iraq is advocating the readmittance of Syria back into the Arab League, and he said he hoped that the remaining Arab countries would work together toward that goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria&#8217;s membership was suspended in 2011 in the early days of the uprising against President Bashar Assad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While some Arab leaders think Syria \u2014 a founding member \u2014 should be readmitted, others like Saudi Arabia and Qatar have spent years supporting the insurgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We better embrace Syria, and hope Syria overcomes the difficulties it has been facing. Simply isolating Syria is not the way to move forward,&#8221; Salih said. He rejected Trump&#8217;s decision this week to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed in 1982, saying the decision is not conducive to peace and security in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iraqi president also called for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from northern Iraq, adding that
