More than 42,000 individuals nationwide are eligible for the aid, potentially dropping tens of thousands of owed dollars from their financial records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despite a push from the agencies, only about 20 percent of the eligible pool of veterans has taken advantage of the program. And more than half of those veterans have already defaulted on their federal loans, creating additional financial problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/12\/27\/this-federal-program-wipes-away-disabled-vets-student-debt-theyre-defaulting-on-their-loans-anyway\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/C-disabled-vets.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This federal program wipes away disabled vets\u2019 student debt. They\u2019re defaulting on their loans anyway.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">About 42,000 veterans had been contacted, and 7,700 had had their loans discharged, according to information provided by the Education Department this week, leading advocates to wonder whether there\u2019s more the federal government can do to expand its the benefit\u2019s reach.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new legislation \u2014 dubbed the Federally Requiring Earned Education-Debt Discharges for Veterans Act, or FREED Vets Act \u2014 would dismiss all federal student loan debt for eligible veterans, regardless of whether they apply for the program. Supporters said the move would ensure that struggling veterans receive the help they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongress has an obligation to ease the challenges our veterans face when they come home and return to civilian life,\u201d Rep. Connor Lamb, D-Pa. and a sponsor of the House draft of the bill, said in a statement. \u201cThis important bipartisan legislation provides a clear pathway for eligible disabled veterans to receive a benefit they have earned through their service and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of automatically erasing the debt has been floated in the past, and was considered when federal officials first adopted the student loan forgiveness plan. But opponents of the idea \u2014 including the Department of Education \u2014 said under previous rules such a move could have created new tax liabilities for some families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. and a Senate sponsor of the new legislation, said those issues were clarified in the 2017 tax overhaul. He said in a statement that he anticipates the proposal will move forward with strong support from both parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a commonsense way to make it easier for totally and permanently disabled veterans to receive the student loan relief they deserve, and I hope that we\u2019re able to act quickly on it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2019\/04\/25\/this-school-waives-out-of-state-tuition-for-vets-gi-bill-or-no-gi-bill\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/C-OleMiss.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This school waives out-of-state tuition for vets, GI Bill or no GI Bill<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Out-of-state tuition rates? For qualifying vets, there\u2019s no such thing at this school \u2014 regardless of whether they have GI Bill benefits.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with Isakson and Lamb, the measure was introduced by Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Jack Reed, D-R.I. and Reps. Joe Courtney, D-Conn., Andy Levin, D-Mich., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Guy Reschenthaler, R-Pa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the existing program, the loan forgiveness bill would also apply to federal student loans that disabled veterans take out for their children\u2019s education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No timetable has been set for when House and Senate lawmakers may vote on the measure. Both would have to approve the idea before it could be sent to the White House to become law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans who think they may be eligible for the debt
