{"id":58232,"date":"2018-10-03T17:36:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T17:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/03\/advocates-call-for-a-renewed-national-conversation-on-veterans-suicide\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:17:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:17:10","slug":"advocates-call-for-a-renewed-national-conversation-on-veterans-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2018\/10\/03\/advocates-call-for-a-renewed-national-conversation-on-veterans-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"Advocates call for a renewed national conversation on veteran suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Melissa Bryant said the 5,520 flags placed along the National Mall Wednesday to illustrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.va.gov\/suicide_prevention\/data.asp\" target=_blank>the toll of veteran suicide<\/a> this year alone were more than just a visual reminder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/07\/25\/ptsd-disability-claims-by-vets-tripled-in-the-last-decade\/\" target=_blank>the scope of the problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we came out here this morning to plant these flags, every one of us had a friend or family member in mind,\u201d said Bryant, chief policy officer for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. \u201cSome of us standing here could have been one of these flags, but for an intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event \u2014 which has become an unfortunately annual occurrence for veterans advocates \u2014 is part of a broader push in recent weeks by lawmakers, veterans groups and Veterans Affairs officials to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/05\/31\/white-house-finalizes-plan-to-stem-suicides-among-recently-separated-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">bring the issue of suicide among former military members<\/a> back into public consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, VA officials released new data that showed the overall rate of suicides among veterans has held steady at around 20 a day for roughly a decade, but researchers are seeing a troubling increase in the rate of younger veterans taking their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/09\/26\/suicide-rate-spikes-among-younger-veterans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3796831.jpg_ea479f.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA: Suicide rate for younger veterans increased by more than 10 percent<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new report from Veterans Affairs researchers shows mixed results from suicide prevention initiatives.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those realities come despite a concerned push in recent years by policy makers who have increased crisis intervention and mental health treatment resources for veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., and vice ranking member of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, said the next step for Congress is to ensure that VA facilities are properly staffed to respond to the needs of suicidal veterans, and to better identify what programs are working to help stem the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, in a hearing before that committee, health experts said they see a gap in integrating those lessons learned into local community services, to provide a broader safety net for veterans in distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to help fix that gap that, advocates said, they need to remind the public of the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have seen far too many veterans and members of my community fall to suicide,\u201d Said Kristen Rouse, founding director of the New York City Veterans Alliance, at Wednesday\u2019s event. \u201cWhat we see behind us represents a national crisis \u2026 These are veterans from your home state, from your hometown, from your home city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Wednesday\u2019s event \u2014 held between the Capitol building and the Washington Monument, in an area with heavy tourist foot traffic \u2014 dozens of onlookers stopped to take pictures of the display and talk to the advocates involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephanie Keegan, whose son Daniel served in Afghanistan but died in 2016 because of delays in receiving treatment for his post-traumatic stress disorder, said she was grateful to share her families struggles with those visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt absolutely makes a difference,\u201d she said. \u201cNot enough people understand the problem and the consequences of our wars. As a country, we need to pay more attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To contact the Veteran Crisis Line, callers can dial 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer.
