{"id":58413,"date":"2021-11-09T20:05:33","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T20:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/09\/how-army-special-ops-can-push-back-against-russian-aggression\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:40:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:40:13","slug":"how-army-special-ops-can-push-back-against-russian-aggression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/11\/09\/how-army-special-ops-can-push-back-against-russian-aggression\/","title":{"rendered":"How Army special ops can push back against Russian aggression"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an ever-diminishing role in counterterror, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/30\/as-counterterror-missions-fade-special-operations-finds-time-to-fix-its-own-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">special operations troops are in transition<\/a>, moving back toward a traditional supporting role in a larger effort to deter countries with navies and air forces and other capabilities more on par with the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/14\/the-future-of-special-operations-may-look-a-lot-different-than-the-gwot-aesthetic-weve-come-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\">special operations forces<\/a> in particular have a role to play in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/10\/13\/combined-russian-and-chinese-military-power-will-approach-but-not-exceed-us-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">countering Russia<\/a>, according to an Army Special Operations Command-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/pubs\/research_reports\/RRA412-1.html\" target=\"_blank\">Rand Corp. report released Monday<\/a>, but they\u2019ll need more concrete direction to be useful going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough U.S. strategic guidance proclaims that the United States has entered a new era of great-power competition, concepts for succeeding in that competition remain underdeveloped,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what can Army special operations bring to the fight? By returning to its roots, particularly for Special Forces, Army special operations can work with allies to strengthen their capabilities against foes like Russia, while at the same time giving the U.S. situational awareness of conditions on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn conditions of more intensified competition, when the risk of armed conflict is high, ARSOF can help to defend against proxy forces used by U.S. adversaries,\u201d according to the report. \u201cARSOF can also be used to disrupt adversary operations in denied environments or to impose costs on adversaries, although the most aggressive uses of ARSOF\u2014unconventional warfare intended to overthrow adversary governments\u2014have traditionally been high-risk activities with relatively low rates of success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2017\/09\/13\/if-russia-started-world-war-iii-heres-how-it-would-go-down\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/the-russians-are-coming.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">If Russia started World War III, here\u2019s how it would go down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. and NATO forces on Europe&#039;s eastern border are vastly outnumbered by the Russian military and could be quickly overwhelmed if Moscow mounted an aggressive assault into the Baltic region.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to be successful, the authors wrote, Army SOF needs a few things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Army doctrine, specifically Multi-Domain Operations, needs to include specific guidance for SOF.<\/li><li>Special Operations Command and the assistant defense secretary for special operations\/low-intensity conflict should do regular reviews of Army SOF activities to make sure they are in line with the change in focus to \u201cstrategic competition.\u201d<\/li><li>SOF should only engage directly with Russia, through unconventional or information warfare, in rare circumstances.<\/li><li>Special operations troops should be embedded with allies as part of a \u201clong-term political-military strategy,\u201d as their progress tends to be incremental and measured by the successes of those partner nations in their own strategies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere may well be specific contexts in which UW and aggressive uses of [operations in the information environment] are appropriate tools for the United States to compel Russia to cease certain activities or to disrupt and degrade its ability to pursue them,\u201d the report found. \u201cBut the potential benefits of such instruments must be carefully weighed
