Britain is sending hundreds of soldiers to Poland and offering more warships and planes. Germany, the Netherlands and Norway are sending additional troops to Lithuania. Denmark and Spain are providing jets for air policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fact that we have deployed <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-europe-russia-united-states-vladimir-putin-534fb1c355ff5f135ba0261cb1448c3c\">more NATO troops <\/a>on the ground, more naval assets, more aircraft, all of that sends a very clear message,\u201d NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. \u201cI think there is no room for any miscalculation in Moscow about our commitment to defending allies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deployment has come in response to a formidable challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last four months, Russia is estimated to have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/03\/more-russian-forces-mass-near-border-but-still-not-ready-to-attack-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">amassed around 60 percent of its entire land forces and a significant portion of its air force to the north and east of Ukraine<\/a>, as well as in neighboring Belarus. Moscow has appeared ready to repeat its 2014 invasion of Ukraine, but on a grander scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian President Vladimir Putin wants NATO, the world\u2019s biggest security organization, to stop expanding. He demands that the U.S.-led alliance pull its troops and equipment out of countries that joined after 1997 \u2013 almost half of NATO\u2019s 30-strong ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/03\/more-russian-forces-mass-near-border-but-still-not-ready-to-attack-ukraine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/UR11.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">More Russian forces mass near border, but still not ready to attack: Ukraine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThe likelihood of more substantive escalation on the Ukrainian boarders as for today is viewed as low,\u201d according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NATO cannot accept his terms. It\u2019s founding treaty commits to an \u201cOpen Door\u201d policy for European countries that want to join, and a mutual defense clause guarantees that all members will come to the defense of an ally under threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ukraine, though, is not a member and NATO, as an organization, is not willing to come to its defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to understand that Ukraine is a partner. We support Ukraine. But for all NATO allies, we provide 100% security guarantees,\u201d Stoltenberg told reporters ahead of Wednesday\u2019s meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, some member countries are helping Ukraine more directly, such as the U.S., Britain and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will be providing both lethal and non-lethal aid to Ukraine. This is a very significant issue for us all,\u201d Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the \u201cmassive costs\u201d promised to Putin should he order an invasion would be economic and political, mostly in the form of sanctions, which are not part of NATO\u2019s remit. The alliance has offered Russia a series of security talks, including on arms control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the last two days, Russia has said that it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/16\/russia-says-it-pulls-back-more-troops-amid-ukraine-standoff-us-skeptical\/\" target=\"_blank\">returning some troops and weapons to bases<\/a>, but Stoltenberg said the allies saw no concrete sign of a drawdown and concern that that Russia might invade Ukraine persists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have always moved forces back and forth, so just that we see movement of forces, that doesn\u2019t confirm a real withdrawal,\u201d Stoltenberg said. \u201cThe trend of the last weeks and months has been a steady increase in the Russian capabilities close to Ukraine\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the ministers agreed for military commanders to come up with new options for strengthening NATO\u2019s defenses in southeast Europe near Romania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMoscow has made it clear that it is prepared to contest the fundamental principles that have underpinned our security for decades, and to do so by using force. I regret to say that this is the new normal in Europe,\u201d Stoltenberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France is set to lead one contingent in Romania, but the battlegroup is unlikely to be in place for several months, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia poses no direct security threat to any NATO country, but the alliance is concerned about the fallout from any conflict in Ukraine, like a surge of people fleeing fighting across European borders, or possible cyber and disinformation
