He informed lawmakers of the additional delay earlier this week and expects a public announcement in mid-July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That likely means a delay of deploying the records system to the Columbus, Ohio, VA medical center. Work there was supposed to begin later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While not announcing an official delay, McDonough noted that work is not likely to begin immediately after the new roll-out plan is unveiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategic review was launched in March, just a few weeks after the Government Accountability Office recommended postponing further expansion of the records project until lingering issues with the system were resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GAO researchers noted that as of last fall, \u201cVA was at risk of deploying a system that did not perform as intended and could negatively impact the likelihood of its successful adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10-year health records project \u2014 heavily touted by former President Donald Trump\u2019s administration as a transformation effort for VA \u2014 is designed to bring veterans and military medical software into alignment, allowing for lifelong medical records for troops and veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But deployment of the software has had a difficult start, with multiple delays in the initial site introductions of the records and numerous concerns raised by staff tasked with integrating the unfamiliar files and formats into their medical care plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough said the review has shown the need for different approaches, but also emphasized that officials aren\u2019t considering abandoning the records system, developed by Cerner, in favor of reverting to older options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to stick with this technology,\u201d he said. \u201cWe support the decision to go with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/12\/watchdog-suggests-va-halt-medical-records-overhaul-until-lingering-issues-are-resolved\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-medical-records-1-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Watchdog suggests VA halt medical records overhaul until lingering issues are resolved<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">GAO officials said work should halt until fixes are in place, but VA officials said they can make corrections without delaying any deployment plans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have already moved more than 24 million veteran health records into the new system. All VA facilities were expected to be using the system by the end of 2028. Whether that timeline will change with the new recommendations is unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House appropriators earmarked $2.6 billion for the continued implementation of the electronic records system in their draft budget for VA released last week, about $26 million less than what the White House requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Appropriators said the money would \u201callow for intensive staff training, critical to the success of the effort\u201d but the funding would also be tied to \u201cGAO oversight of this program, to ensure that the EHR system is implemented in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement Wednesday, House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Mike Bost, R-Ill., praised VA for stepping back to evaluate the work so far, but said improvements must be made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going forward, VA must demonstrate to Congress and veterans that this review was successful, and those problems are fixed,\u201d he said. \u201cAdjusting the organizational chart is not enough. The electronic health record must improve.
