The balloons carried student payloads from multiple schools in the region, including Metropolitan State University of Denver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One cadre of space cadets reported to retired Air Force Reserve Col. Jose Lopez, left, now an engineering lecturer at Metropolitan State University of Denver, warms up inside while awaiting the early morning launch of his students&#8217; experiments.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Trevor Davis\/Metropolitan State University of Denver<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lopez&#8217;s career in uniform involved military satellites and nuclear weapons, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, and he worked in space programs for Raytheon and Lockheed Martin as a civilian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the students in Lopez&#8217;s Introduction to Space class this spring was Air Force Reserve Senior Airman William Skinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skinner&#8217;s team&#8217;s &#8220;balloonsat&#8221; experiment, dubbed The Gas Giants, sent aloft smaller balloons filled with one of four gases \u2014 nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen and helium. The big balloon burst at 91,000 feet and landed on a farm about 30 miles from the launch site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team&#8217;s tiny CO2 balloon leaked, but the five members were able to measure their other three balloons&#8217; internal pressures when each burst, concluding: &#8220;From this data, we can see that both the helium and oxygen balloons&#8217; internal pressure at burst were just under 2 atmospheres, where the nitrous oxide was over 7!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>New at MSU Denver: <\/b>At 32nd among four-year schools in our <a href=\"http:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/2015\/colleges\/4-year\/\" title=\"http:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/2015\/colleges\/4-year\/\">Best for Vets: Colleges 2015 rankings<\/a>, the university enacted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msudenver.edu\/newsroom\/news\/2015\/march\/09-priority-registration.shtml\" title=\"https:\/\/www.msudenver.edu\/newsroom\/news\/2015\/march\/09-priority-registration.shtml\">priority class registration for students receiving veterans benefits<\/a> this spring in the form of a three-hour head start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also announced <a href=\"http:\/\/msudenver.edu\/newsroom\/news\/2015\/february\/16-military-transfer-policy.shtml\" title=\"http:\/\/msudenver.edu\/newsroom\/news\/2015\/february\/16-military-transfer-policy.shtml\">a package of transfer credits for military service<\/a>.
