Steve Daines, R-Mont., during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on the VA work. \u201cBy the time something gets implemented, it could be obsolete before it goes live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last May, department officials finalized a sweeping contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/02\/28\/officials-say-new-military-health-records-plan-on-track-already-showing-results\/\" target=\"_blank\">Missouri-based Cerner Corp.<\/a> to bring veterans\u2019 electronic medical records in line with Defense Department systems, a move that administration officials have repeatedly touted as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/31\/new-va-health-care-rules-trump-overreach-or-more-choice-for-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">a cornerstone of VA reform efforts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/05\/17\/va-finalizes-contract-to-bring-electronic-health-records-in-line-with-military-systems\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-medical-records-2-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA finalizes contract to bring electronic health records in line with military systems<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The multi-year and multi-billion-dollar effort could have wide ranging impact on all of American health care.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea holds the promise for seamless transitions of medical records for active-duty troops to their post-service life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But past efforts at the goal have turned into expensive failures, as the two separate departments have held onto their separate systems. The latest effort is designed to forever link the two departments&#8217; health care systems in a way that still provides enough flexibility for VA physicians to keep up with private-sector offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acting VA Deputy Secretary James Byrne on Tuesday told the Senate panel that work thus far on the latest attempt is progressing as planned. Existing VA records data is already being moved into the new system. Timelines for implementation are under discussion, and coordination between the federal agencies and contractor happen on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senators praised that news but also warned that early success can easily come undone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They pointed to the massive information technology programs last fall which lead to mistakes in veterans education benefit payments for thousands of students, noting the scope of that work pales in comparison to the tens of millions of records being transformed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daines and others questioned whether VA officials can fulfill their promise of a modern, commercial-friendly records system with a decade-long timeline. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., questioned whether the department can face any significant wait without a new appointment scheduling system, set to be linked to the new records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said the entire effort \u201chas the potential to be transformational to veterans\u201d or also another costly mess. John Boozman, R-Ark., and chairman of the appropriations committee\u2019s veterans policy panel, said the biggest challenge facing the work ahead \u201cis the need for (VA\u2019s) workforce to embrace what will be a wholesale change in the way they do business on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said they are already working on training and adaptation plans.
