(Ben Murray \/ Military Times)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon provided reporters a map Thursday afternoon indicating that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2019\/06\/20\/iran-revolutionary-guard-shoots-down-us-drone-amid-tensions\/\" target=_blank>U.S. drone shot down by Iran <\/a>was over international waters, challenging Iran\u2019s allegations that the drone was flying over Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Gen. Joseph Guastella, Commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of shooting a U.S. Navy RQ-4 Global Hawk surveillance drone as it was flying over the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz as part of a surveillance mission. Guastella rejected Iran\u2019s statement that the drone was taken down over Iranian airspace, and said that the aircraft plummeted into international waters instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reporters were provided a map indicating where the US military said the aircraft fell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"867\" height=\"551\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Map-of-Shootdown.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Map-of-Shootdown.JPG.jpg 867w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Map-of-Shootdown.JPG.jpg?resize=300,191 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Map-of-Shootdown.JPG.jpg?resize=768,488 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis attack is an attempt to disrupt our ability to monitor the area following recent threats to international shipping and free flow of commerce. Bill Urban, a CENTCOM spokesman, expressed similar sentiments about the attack Thursday morning. CENTCOM also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centcom.mil\/MEDIA\/VIDEO-AND-IMAGERY\/VIDEOS\/\" target=_blank>released video<\/a> of the shootdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Maj. Gen. (Vahid Salemi\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe downing of the US drone had an explicit, decisive and clear message that defenders of the Islamic Iran\u2019s borders will show decisive and knockout reactions to aggression against this territory by any alien,\u201d Salami said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tasnimnews.com\/en\/news\/2019\/06\/20\/2036794\/irgc-reveals-more-details-of-downing-us-drone\" target=\"_blank\">according to Tasnim News Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although he claimed Iran wasn\u2019t interested in starting a war, he noted that Iran is ready to defend itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s incident was a clear sign of such a precise message,\u201d Salami said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ret. Adm. William Fallon suggested Iran\u2019s latest actions were likely an attempt to undermine support for the U.S. from other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cClearly the Iranians are unhappy with the pressure that the administration has put on them and they\u2019re trying to figure out a way to push back on it,\u201d Fallon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the objective is to either directly get us to back off, or more likely, to create a situation where others don\u2019t support the U.S.,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack coincides with escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran. For example, the U.S. has blamed Iran for attacking two oil tankers near the Gulf of Oman.
