{"id":63623,"date":"2020-05-13T19:15:25","date_gmt":"2020-05-13T19:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/13\/special-operations-using-artificial-intelligence-personality-traits-to-recruit-and-select\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:18:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:18:00","slug":"special-operations-using-artificial-intelligence-personality-traits-to-recruit-and-select","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/05\/13\/special-operations-using-artificial-intelligence-personality-traits-to-recruit-and-select\/","title":{"rendered":"Special operations using artificial intelligence, personality traits to recruit and select"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/10\/12\/top-recruiter-just-136000-out-of-33-million-young-americans-would-join-the-army\/\" target=\"_blank\">less than 1 percent<\/a> of young Americans both willing and able to join the military, even fewer of whom can pass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/28\/special-operations-has-an-entitlement-problem-heres-how-they-intend-to-fix-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">special operations<\/a> selection, each service is looking at creative ways to use the skills and attributes would-be operators can bring to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes prioritizing technology experience for some services, while in others, using data and artificial intelligence to pinpoint who might be the best fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think all the services in the environment we\u2019re in are having challenges right now,\u201d Maj. Gen. Daniel Yoo, head of Marine Corps Special Operations Command, said in a virtual presentation Wednesday during the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/05\/12\/special-operators-will-be-countering-violent-extremists-for-the-long-haul\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Special Operations Forces Industry Conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force Special Operations Command is using algorithms for its recruiting, according to its boss, with 30 years\u2019 worth of data collected from its force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re moving ourselves increasingly away from an assessment and selection program that\u2019s based on performance and more toward one based on attributes,\u201d Lt. Gen. James Slife said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in other areas of combat operations, physical prowess has been seen as the No. 1 indicator of effectiveness \u2015 but that is evolving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it\u2019s not really as much about how quickly you can do a ruck march with a 30-pound ruck and how many pullups and push-ups you can do, it\u2019s really more about the attributes you possess,\u201d Slife said, including leadership skills, resilience and other interpersonal strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W8ywjlXnP5o' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re using algorithms and data mining to suss out what makes the most successful special operators, he said, not only in terms of mission effectiveness, but longevity and overall impact on the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is doing something similar with artificial intelligence, according to the head of its special operations command.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/09\/24\/earn-big-bucks-move-up-faster-when-you-go-army-special-ops-but-can-you-cut-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-special-ops-recruiting-cover-4.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Earn big bucks, move up faster when you go Army special ops \u2014 but can you cut it?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Special Operations Recruiting Battalion is looking to fill thousands of jobs in Special Forces, special ops aviation, civil affairs and psychological operations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were also able to identify those most likely to succeed,\u201d Lt. Gen. Francis Beaudette said. Then, the command uses that technology to reach out to individuals already serving in the Army, as the vast majority of their new recruits come from the conventional force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The command has also used this technology to control for any biases in their recruiting efforts, he said \u2015 for instance, focusing on a certain gender, military occupational specialty or particular military experience \u2015 \u201cto maximize and optimize diversity in our formations, if you will.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while athletic prowess is still at the top of the special operations must-haves, there are some more technical skills that could set hopefuls apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne area they\u2019re looking a lot for is somebody that can work in the information environment, but then also has the physical capabilities to do what we want to do in the special operations community,\u201d Yoo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As special operations evolves past the boots-on-the-ground intelligence gathering and door-kicking it honed during the War on Terror, those skills will play a role, according to the head of Naval Special Warfare Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think all of what we\u2019re getting into the pipelines now are more digital natives,\u201d Rear Adm. Collin Green said. \u201cThey\u2019re more savvy, so how do we harness what they\u2019ve learned growing up to apply to the creativity of warfare going
