{"id":64083,"date":"2022-06-28T18:18:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-28T18:18:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/28\/us-strike-kills-al-qaida-linked-commander-in-syria\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:38:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T11:38:13","slug":"us-strike-kills-al-qaida-linked-commander-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/flashpoints\/2022\/06\/28\/us-strike-kills-al-qaida-linked-commander-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"US strike kills al-Qaida-linked commander in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIRUT \u2014 A drone strike by the U.S.-led coalition in northwestern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/01\/21\/us-carried-out-airstrikes-in-syria-against-isis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Syria<\/a> killed a senior member of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/afghanistan\/2021\/12\/09\/us-commander-al-qaida-numbers-in-afghanistan-up-slightly\/\" target=\"_blank\">al-Qaida<\/a>-linked group, Syrian opposition activists and the U.S. military said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attack on the suspected militant, who was riding a motorcycle at the time, came shortly before midnight on Monday \u2014 the latest in a series of strikes over the past years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2021\/10\/22\/senior-al-qaida-leader-killed-in-northwest-syria-drone-strike-centcom\/\" target=\"_blank\">targeting al-Qaida-linked militants in northwestern Syria<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Central Command said its forces conducted \u201ca kinetic strike\u201d in Syria\u2019s Idlib province, targeting Abu Hamzah al Yemeni, a senior leader of Horas al-Din group. Al Yemeni was traveling alone at the time of the strike, it said, adding that initial review indicates no civilian casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposition\u2019s Syrian Civil Defense, also known as White Helmets, said the attack occurred just south of the rebel-held city of Idlib. The White Helmets said there were no other fatalities except the man on the motorcycle, adding that they have handed over the man\u2019s body to morgue officials in Idlib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syrian opposition activists did not identify the slain man while the U.S. Central Command statement indicated he was a Yemeni citizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of Horas al-Din, Arabic for \u201cGuardians of Religion,\u201d are hardcore al-Qaida elements who broke away from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the strongest insurgent group in Idlib, the last major rebel enclave in war-torn Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June 2020, the U.S. military killed Khaled Aruri, a top Jordanian commander with Horas al-Din, also in Idlib. A drone strike in December 2019 killed a senior Horas al-Din commander, the Jordanian citizen Bilal Khuraisat, also known as Abu Khadija al-Urduni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CENTCOM said in its statement that violent extremist organizations, including Al Qaida-aligned organizations such as Horas al-Din, \u201ccontinue to present a threat to America and our allies.\u201d It added that al-Qaida-aligned militants use Syria as a safe haven to coordinate with their external affiliates and plan operations outside of Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe removal of this senior leader will disrupt al-Qaida\u2019s ability to carry out attacks against U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians around the world,\u201d CENTCOM said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brett McGurk said at the time when he was the top U.S. envoy for the coalition battling the Islamic State group, that Idlib is the largest al-Qaida haven since bin Laden\u2019s days in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. airstrike killed al-Qaida\u2019s second in command, former bin Laden aide Abu al-Kheir al-Masri, in Syria in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the U.S. military killed the latest IS leader,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/02\/03\/us-commandos-launch-successful-raid-in-syria-civilians-also-reported-dead\/\">Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, in Idlib province<\/a>&nbsp;near the Turkish border. The first leader of the Islamic State group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was also killed in a U.S. strike in Idlib, in 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The attack on the suspected
