Among the planes were H-6G and H-6K bombers, upgraded versions of planes long in use with the People\u2019s Liberation Army Air Force and the People\u2019s Liberation Army Navy Air Force, Ren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the exercises had been previously scheduled and were aimed at boosting pilot abilities to operate under all natural conditions. It wasn\u2019t clear whether live bombs were used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ren\u2019s statement appeared to distance the drills from recent accusations exchanged between the sides over China\u2019s claim to virtually all of the South China Sea, which it has buttressed in recent years by building man-made islands equipped with runways.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/07\/13\/us-to-reject-nearly-all-chinese-claims-in-south-china-sea\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/50083340182_2b7366a62f_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US rejects nearly all Chinese claims in South China Sea<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Trump administration escalated its actions against China on Monday by stepping squarely into one of the most sensitive regional issues dividing them and rejecting outright nearly all of Beijing\u2019s significant maritime claims in the South China Sea.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. this month for the first time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/07\/14\/us-warship-sails-contested-waters-in-south-china-sea-after-white-house-rejects-chinas-maritime-claims-there\/\" target=_blank>rejected China\u2019s claims outright<\/a>, prompting Beijing to accuse it of seeking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/06\/08\/us-rejects-china-maritime-claims-in-south-china-sea\/\" target=_blank>create discord between China and its neighbors<\/a>. Five other governments also exercise claims in the South China Sea, through which around $5 trillion in trade is transported annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, U.S. policy had been to insist that maritime disputes between China and its smaller neighbors be resolved peacefully through U.N.-backed arbitration. But in a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the U.S. now regards virtually all Chinese maritime claims outside its internationally recognized waters to be illegitimate. Washington and Taipei have no formal diplomatic ties but the U.S. is the island\u2019s key provider of defensive arms and is legally obligated to treat threats to the island as matters of grave concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. must realize that China is destined to unify (with Taiwan), and China is destined to realize its great rejuvenation,\u201d\u201d Ren
