Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command, in a press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A task force of roughly 300 Marines deployed to Afghanistan\u2019s volatile Helmand province will be among the forward-deployed advisers benefiting from the A-10\u2019s arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new task force is intended to advise Afghan forces at the kandak, or battalion, level. Advise-and-assists missions were previously limited to the brigade level and above, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/16\/marines-push-closer-to-the-fight-in-helmand\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">officials said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also deploying this spring to Afghanistan is the Army\u2019s 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade, a new and specially trained unit of military advisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/11\/army-advisers-in-specialized-unit-set-to-deploy-to-afghanistan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"277\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SFABteamleader.jpg.jpg?w=277\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army advisers in specialized unit set to deploy to Afghanistan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade will make its maiden deployment to Afghanistan in the spring, according to a Thursday release from the Army.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The return of the A-10s is also intended to support the increased need for precision strikes against Taliban financing ventures, such as narcotics processing labs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we\u2019ve applied increased pressure on the Taliban and their revenue sources with precision air power, we\u2019ve gained considerable momentum in our effort to force them to reconcile or face defeat,\u201d Harrigian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since November, the airstrikes conducted against Taliban narcotics production facilities cost the Taliban more than $20 million, according to AFCENT figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite those strikes, Maj. Gen. James Hecker, commander of NATO Air Command-Afghanistan, said that \u201cthe Taliban still has not felt the full brunt of American and Afghan air power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the arrival of new air assets and the growing capabilities of Afghan pilots, the Taliban will have a constant eye towards the sky,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These new A-10s are coming from the 303rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron based out of Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, according to AFCENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the arrival of the A-10s, AFCENT has also shifted MQ-9 Reapers and HH-60G Pave Hawks to Kandahar Airfield from other deployed locations in U.S. Central Command\u2019s area of operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Reapers will be able to provide armed over-watch and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance for forward-deployed troops, while the Pave Hawk helicopters will increase personnel recovery and search and rescue operations, according to AFCENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Along with a detachment of KC-135 Stratotankers that have flown from Kandahar since September, the A-10s, MQ-9s and HH-60G will complement F-16s, C130J, EC-130H and other coalition aircraft operating out of Bagram Airfield.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the U.S. air support, the Afghan Air Force is planning to more than double their fleet of aircraft over the next seven years, according to AFCENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/14\/dod-ig-afghan-attack-pilots-are-helping-turn-the-tide-for-troops-on-the-ground\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3809418.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">DoD IG: Afghan attack pilots are helping turn the tide for troops on the ground<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Less than two years after flying its first combat mission, the Afghan Air Force\u2019s A-29 Super Tucano aircraft are playing a key role in supporting Afghan soldiers on the ground.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans include the introduction of AC-208 combat caravan aircraft and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, as well as more A-29 light-attack aircraft and MD-530 light-attack helicopters to the Afghan air fleet already conducting airstrikes in country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe growing Afghan Air Force is vital to the success of [the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces] on the battlefield,\u201d said Maj.
