Pyongyang has also expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/07\/16\/north-korea-suggests-it-might-lift-weapons-test-moratorium\/\" target=_blank>anger over planned U.S.-South Korea military drills<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KCNA said Kim expressed satisfaction over the test firings and said the newly developed rocket system would create an \u201cinescapable distress to the forces becoming a fat target of the weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/11\/16\/north-korea-says-it-has-tested-new-high-tech-tactical-weapon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1055329776.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">North Korea says it has tested \u2018ultramodern tactical weapon\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed the successful test of \u201ca newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon,\u201d the nation\u2019s state media reported Friday, though it didn\u2019t describe what sort of weapon it was.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency provided no specific descriptions of how the \u201clarge-caliber multiple launch guided rocket system\u201d performed during the launches, but said the tests confirmed the system\u2019s technical characteristics and \u201ccombat effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea\u2019s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Wednesday that the weapons it then assessed as missiles flew about 250 kilometers (155 miles) at an apogee of 30 kilometers (19 miles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Korea\u2019s military had no immediate comment over the North Korean report. U.S. officials have downplayed the threat of the launches to the United States and its allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.N. Security Council is expected to discuss the latest launches behind closed doors Thursday at the request of the United Kingdom, France and Germany, council diplomats said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analysts say North Korea with its consecutive weapons tests is demonstrating its displeasure with the pace of nuclear diplomacy with Washington. North Korea\u2019s state media said those tests were supervised by Kim and were designed to deliver a \u201csolemn warning\u201d to South Korea over its purchase of high-tech, U.S.-made fighter jets and the planned military drills, which Pyongyang calls an invasion rehearsal. The North also tested short-range missiles on May 4 and 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier last week, Kim visited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/07\/23\/kim-inspects-new-submarine-wants-north-korean-military-bolstered\/\" target=_blank>a newly built submarine<\/a> and expressed his satisfaction with its weapons system. North Korea said its deployment was \u201cnear at hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a private briefing to lawmakers Wednesday, South Korean military intelligence officers said they\u2019ve determined that the submarine likely has three launch tubes for missiles, according to Lee Hye-hoon, head of parliament\u2019s intelligence committee. (Korean Central News Agency\/Korea News Service via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">North Korea acquiring the ability to launch missiles from submarines would be an alarming development because such missiles are harder to detect in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wednesday\u2019s launches came hours after a senior U.S. official said President Donald Trump sent Kim mementos from his brief visit to an inter-Korean border town late last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The official said a top staffer from the National Security Council hand-delivered photographs from the leaders\u2019 June meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone to a North Korean official last week. The Trump administration official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official wasn\u2019t authorized to speak publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DMZ meeting was the third summit between Trump and Kim. At their second meeting, in Vietnam in February, Trump rejected Kim\u2019s demand for widespread sanctions relief in return for dismantling the North\u2019s main nuclear complex, a partial disarmament step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the DMZ meeting, Trump and Kim agreed to resume nuclear diplomacy in coming weeks, but there hasn\u2019t been any known meeting between the
