Whatever it is, it will be fixed very quickly,\u201d Mattis said of the issue, which came to light in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In that incident,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/18\/air-force-b-1-lancer-blew-escape-hatch-in-emergency-landing-but-its-seat-did-not-eject\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> a B-1 crew experiencing a potentially catastrophic engine fire<\/a> was unable to eject from the jet due to an ejection seat malfunction for one of the four crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crew remained on board and was able to successfully land the bomber at Midland International Air and Space Port in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are times where we find a problem with some aspect of an airplane so we\u2019ll shut \u2019em down, we\u2019ll check it, and they come back up very quickly,\u201d Mattis said. \u201cWe\u2019ll just have to watch and see how this goes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times reported Monday that there was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/11\/b-1-makes-emergency-landing-in-hawaii\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">second B-1 emergency landing<\/a> just days before the Air Force declared the stand-down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separately, an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/06\/11\/air-force-pilot-in-serious-condition-after-f-15-crash-training-sorties-halted\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> F-15 crashed in Okinawa Sunday,<\/a> leading to a freeze in training sorties there. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis\u2019 comments come as each of the services\u2019 top officers for aviation safety prepare to testify Wednesday on Capitol Hill on their plans to address a sharp rise in aviation accidents over the last five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An in-depth investigation by Military Times found in April that mishaps involving the nation\u2019s bomber, fighter, tanker, helicopter and tiltrotor warplanes jumped almost 40 percent since 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis said the issue has the Pentagon\u2019s full attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a Database shows manned warplane accidents have jumped 39 percent since the 2013 budget cuts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing on readiness \u2014 there\u2019s trailing indicators, I would call them,\u201d Mattis said. \u201cIn other words, if you fail to do things five years ago, three years ago, one year ago, you don\u2019t reverse all those things with the money that Congress has given us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the weekend, he worked through a large binder of readiness issues the services had prepared and are reporting to him, Mattis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those issues will be the subject of a separate Wednesday meeting at the Pentagon led by Deputy Secretary Patrick Shanahan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is probably \u2018the thing\u2019 in terms of priorities for the department,\u201d Mattis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Using his hands, Mattis described the book of readiness challenges the services have compiled as about three inches thick, \u201cwith each of the services going through their major programs \u2014 where there\u2019s been readiness problems, and what we\u2019re doing on each one as we apply the money, or the time, or the
