His children were minors at that time, and he left the money to his brother and to his father, who died about five years before he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was young, and had to pay for my father\u2019s funeral,\u201d Wrenn said. \u201cMy uncle said, \u2018No, this money was for me. Whether they intended to do this, or whether they simply failed to update their beneficiaries after they married and had children, no one will ever know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf there\u2019s a reason you left things the way you left them, let your spouse know. Let your family know,\u201d Wrenn said. \u201cTalk to people about what you decide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you\u2019re determining how much life insurance you\u2019ll need and designating your beneficiaries, think of the consequences for your loved ones. Few people want to think about their own mortality, but think about those you will leave behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2018\/06\/11\/how-to-change-your-sgli-beneficiary-online\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">SGLI: Update your beneficiaries online<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2018\/06\/11\/more-troops-could-get-cash-under-proposals-to-expand-traumatic-injury-benefits\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">TSGLI: New guidance could make more troops eligible for cash<\/a><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you\u2019re active duty or retired, consider how much income will be coming in for those who depend on you after your income stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the primary caregiver dies, there\u2019s the house payment, and all the bills that are normally being paid,\u201d Wrenn said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve known people who were pregnant when the spouse died, and things may not have been updated. Then you\u2019re talking about 18 years \u2026 and that life insurance might have been used to pay off the house, or maybe buy a house to live in for the rest of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018Horrible consequences\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some service members or retirees remarry after divorce and never update their beneficiaries. There have been cases when spouses called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafmaa.com\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association<\/a> to say their spouse has died and that they had an AAFMAA policy, and AAFMAA has had to tell them that the first wife (or husband) is still the main beneficiary on the life insurance policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s a very awkward conversation, as you can imagine,\u201d said Mike Meese, executive vice president of AAFMAA and a retired Army brigadier general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bottom line of the importance of updating beneficiaries is the same bottom line of why life insurance is important, said Meese and Stephen Pietropaoli, a retired Navy rear admiral who is chief operating officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navymutual.org\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Navy Mutual<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou need to think through your situation with a needs assessment,\u201d Pietropaoli said. \u201cReally trying to understand what you\u2019re trying to do. What\u2019s the purpose of life insurance? Income replacement, taking care of a mortgage? Then walking through ways to address that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe biggest challenge for the industry is the education, the information, to get people to understand why they should care that life insurance exists. \u2026 You can set your family up for horrible consequences if you don\u2019t think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Be
