{"id":67488,"date":"2021-05-06T14:39:31","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T14:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/06\/new-panel-to-advise-va-leaders-on-better-response-to-sexual-misconduct-issues\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:01:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:01:34","slug":"new-panel-to-advise-va-leaders-on-better-response-to-sexual-misconduct-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2021\/05\/06\/new-panel-to-advise-va-leaders-on-better-response-to-sexual-misconduct-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"New panel to advise VA leaders on better response to sexual misconduct issues"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faced with controversy and watchdog concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/11\/05\/va-physician-charged-with-sexually-assaulting-fellow-staffers\/\" target=\"_blank\">sexual harassment and misconduct<\/a> within Veterans Affairs facilities, department officials are looking for volunteers for a new working group tasked with finding solutions how those cases are handled and how to prevent them in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel, mandated by Congress as part of comprehensive VA reform legislation passed last year, comes as new department leaders have promised to address the issue, after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/11\/major-veterans-groups-call-for-va-secretarys-ouster-following-damning-report\/\" target=\"_blank\">series of high-profile incidents<\/a> suggested systemic problems with how officials handle sexual misconduct claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A VA survey from 2018 found that one in four women veterans reported experiencing harassment from other veterans during visits to department health care facilities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/07\/15\/watchdog-lawmakers-blast-vas-sexual-harassment-policies-as-inadequate\/\" target=\"_blank\">A separate survey<\/a> of federal workers found that nearly the same percentage have experienced workplace sexual harassment within VA offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/18\/i-hung-up-and-vomited-veteran-sexual-assault-survivors-say-vas-outreach-retraumatized-them\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018I hung up and vomited\u2019 \u2014 Veteran sexual assault survivors say VA\u2019s outreach retraumatized them<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans said they were thrust into public discussions of military sexual trauma topics without warning or proper support.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Government Accountability Office review last summer found that VA leaders do not have a reliable process for collecting or reviewing those complaints, undermining their promises to address the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And last December, former VA Secretary Robert Wilkie drew widespread condemnation after an inspector general report criticized him for an \u201cunprofessional\u201d response to a September 2019 sexual assault report filed by a Hill staffer, who said she was physically abused during a visit to the Washington, D.C. VA Medical Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie had promised an independent investigation into the incident, but investigators said he instead spearheaded an internal campaign to discredit the woman, believing her allegations to be a political stunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His successor, current VA Secretary Denis McDonough, has promised a \u201czero-tolerance\u201d policy on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery VA patient, their families and caregivers, as well as sexual assault survivors, staff, visitors and advocates should feel safe in all VA facilities,\u201d he said in a statement Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll VA entities must be free of gender-based harassment. Officials said they are looking for individuals \u201cwho have diverse professional and personal qualifications who are motivated to advance VA\u2019s leadership on issues of sexual harassment and assault prevention and survivor care and support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All nominations are due by June 7. The working group will serve for one year and does not include any payment or benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on the panel is available on <a
