Corrine Brown, an intensive care unit nurse, that burden involves the uncertainty that remains when treating the sick, 19 months after the pandemic changed everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCOVID doesn\u2019t act like any other disease that we\u2019ve previously treated,\u201d Brown told Military Times this month between sips of Gatorade during a break in her shift. \u201cIt\u2019s almost like dealer\u2019s choice if they\u2019re going to get better or get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brown and her military colleagues are last-gasp reinforcements here, sent in via the Federal Emergency Management Agency a few months ago to help with a ceaseless conveyor belt of sickness that threatened to break Kootenai hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a once-unprecedented military mobilization that has steadily become the norm during the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Brown-main.webp_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Brown-main.webp_.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Brown-main.webp_.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Brown-main.webp_.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army Capt. And after hours, other Army nurses here linger on the bafflement of patients who didn\u2019t believe in the disease, got infected, couldn\u2019t breathe and ended up hospitalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause the number of unvaccinated patients that we see is so high, and they feel so misinformed when they get the infection\u2026it\u2019s this thing that they\u2019ve never thought about and now they are in a very critical state,\u201d Army Capt. Jason Webb, another ICU nurse, said earlier this month. \u201cPeople are still shocked when they get this infection and when they get so sick. And it kind of perplexes me that that\u2019s the case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as the cases keep coming and the state enacts crisis standards of care to deal with the flood, life outside continues as if no pandemic exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just 46 percent of Idaho residents are fully vaccinated, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.idaho.gov\/\">state data<\/a>, nearly 30 points below the national percentage of fully vaccinated adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the pandemic trudges on here, any talk of COVID mitigation\u2014such as requiring masks\u2014has been met with an increasingly aggressive edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A local school district axed plans for a mask mandate after hundreds of protesters swarmed a school board meeting last month and then descended on the district headquarters, prompting a lockdown, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-health-idaho-school-boards-coeur-dalene-d21708f0dab9392a7cc226722c852cb3\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These attitudes have left hospital staff to deal with infection largely on their own, even as they face local ire themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have had people show up with video cameras to be greeted by security, to then cuss them out and call them sheep, then post the video to YouTube,\u201d Caiti Bobbitt, a hospital spokeswoman, said. \u201cFamily members yelling at staff for not giving alternative treatments. Family members yelling at staff for killing their loved ones because COVID isn\u2019t real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amidst this fevered swirl, the Army team and their civilian counterparts work away, trying to save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would love to see this community not in crisis,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/08\/17\/military-deploying-medical-assistance-teams-to-battle-covid-19-surges\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nurse1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military deploying medical assistance teams to battle COVID-19 surges<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Five teams will be ready to deploy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across America, military medical troops like Webb, Brown and the rest of the Idaho team have been a lifeline throughout the pandemic for civilian hospitals like Kootenai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, nearly 5,000 troops have fanned out to COVID hotspots in 19 states and 60 cities, helping overwhelmed staff at 81 hospitals deal with the deluge since March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just since August, roughly 200 Army, Air Force and Navy medical providers have deployed to the nation\u2019s hardest hit regions, including Idaho, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana to help with waves propelled along by the Delta variant and low vaccination rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a far cry from the traditional combat medicine duties of the Idaho team\u2019s unit, the 10th Field Hospital, out of Fort Carson, Colorado, and military medical troops generally don\u2019t provide care to civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But these are unprecedented times, and several of the Army medical staff deployed to Kootenai reported treating past COVID surges from California to Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several of the Idaho Army team said they never thought they\u2019d take on such a mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s just a really high level of stress, constantly,\u201d Brown said. \u201cYour brain just doesn\u2019t stop\u2026we want to support the people of this community so much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018A very hard place to work\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a weekly press conference outside the Kootenai hospital on Oct. 6, during which officials noted there had been one COVID death each day in the young month, the patient numbers continued to swell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All told, the hospital had 150 COVID patients that day, and had opened overflow areas in the complex to accommodate the sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/covid-3-barth.webp_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/covid-3-barth.webp_.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/covid-3-barth.webp_.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/covid-3-barth.webp_.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army Capt. Pitt\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Monday morning, the hospital was reporting 128 COVID patients, 40 of whom required the ICU, a marginal improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, this latest wave has pushed the hospital at times to run 50 to 60 ICU patients a day for an ICU ward normally licensed for just 26 beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in the pandemic, the hospital had dealt with more manageable influxes that peaked around 94 patients, according to hospital officials, who requested help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Civilian and military medical officials said the crisis was made worse by low COVID vaccine take rates and no government-mandated mitigation, like requiring masks indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even among the civilian hospital staff, vaccination rates hover at about 50 percent, and even some physicians remain skeptical of the jab, Dr. Robert Scoggins, chief of staff for critical care, told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaccine attitudes have led to splintering among the hospital staff, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very hard place to work right now,\u201d Scoggins said. \u201cThe patients are very sick, and it\u2019s constant. It\u2019s just a constant struggle to take care of these patients on a daily basis. The nursing staff is tired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Idaho has a right-wing libertarian streak, and some nearby residents are distrustful of the government, which has confounded efforts to get buy-in for the fight against COVID, Scoggins added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He blames the case numbers partly on social media, which has allowed false information about COVID and the vaccines to flourish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, Scoggins wonders if such hesitancy would have been around if COVID hit 20 years ago, before social media took over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe still find people skeptical even when they\u2019re sick with COVID,\u201d he said. \u201cThey don\u2019t believe us, which is really tough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scoggins said he wasn\u2019t sure where they would be if it wasn\u2019t for the Army doctors and nurses, who are there until early November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hospital has put in for an extension of federal assistance beyond that date, but as of Monday, they had not yet received an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know it will end at some point, I think the numbers will eventually go down, I just don\u2019t know when that\u2019s going to happen,\u201d Scoggins said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5478\" height=\"3652\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg 5478w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ap-ID.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5478px) 100vw, 5478px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A sign supporting healthcare workers is photographed at Kootenai Health, Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, in Coeur d&#8217;Alene, Idaho. Northern Idaho has a long and deep streak of antigovernment activism that is confounding attempts to battle a COVID-19 outbreak.(AP Photo\/Young Kwak)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018He never recovered\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kootenai has a no-media policy for areas of the hospital where COVID patients are treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on Oct. 6, several of the deployed Army team, face-masked and bleary eyed, took a break from the workday to share their experience with Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked to describe her craziest shift of the deployment, Capt. Brown, the ICU nurse, laughed dryly and answered, \u201cthis morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCritical care nurses, our big thing is critical thinking, anticipating what\u2019s going to happen next,\u201d Brown explained. \u201cKnowing, okay, based off their diagnosis and what medications they\u2019re on, this is where I can expect things to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But with COVID, predicting whether a patient is going to improve or die remains anybody\u2019s guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs of late, the last week or so, it\u2019s been very quick declines, where they\u2019re doing fine and everything seems to be okay,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patient oxygen levels are fragile, and that vital indicator sometimes drops with the slightest movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt just takes one event, one time for them to\u2026get up and move around, and their oxygen will crash\u2026to a place where it can\u2019t recover,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s actually what happened to our patient yesterday,\u201d Brown added. \u201cAll we were doing was\u2026just shifting them. Pitt\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Webb likened the illness to being held underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou take the oxygen off so they can blow their nose or whatever and all of a sudden they\u2019re basically suffocating,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s terribly frightening\u2026You can provide all the medical education in the world, but that does little to sway the fears of dying from a lack of oxygen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three nurses are assigned to every six patients in Kootenai\u2019s COVID ICU. Keeping tabs on everyone\u2019s vitals and medications is time-consuming in and of itself before a patient\u2019s condition worsens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYesterday and today, honestly, we\u2019ve had patients that were so sick\u2026we were completely maxing them out on the oxygen support that we can give them, the blood pressure support we can give them, medications that artificially kind of raise their blood pressure in order to make sure they\u2019re still (supplying oxygen to) their vital organs, their brain, their heart, their lungs,\u201d Brown recalled. \u201cWe had three patients that were kind of at that point yesterday on our team alone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also noted a recent patient whose blood pressure continued to plummet, and how she and other providers worked on that patient for three hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe hung five different types of medications on one patient in an hour, just trying to keep their blood pressure up enough to where they\u2019re (supplying oxygen to) their brain, so they don\u2019t get brain injuries,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This unpredictability leaves medical staff unable to reassure loved ones of the sick, according to Webb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey say, \u2018when is he or she going to get better?\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd my answer is always going to be, \u2018I don\u2019t know when that\u2019s going to be or even if they\u2019re going to get better, and they may or may not get worse before they get better.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Webb said Oct. 5, the day before he spoke with a Military Times reporter, was the craziest, most hectic shift he had experienced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA patient that was already extremely sick got even sicker, we pulled out literally all the stops,\u201d he recalled. \u201cIn addition to that, I had\u2026three other extremely sick patients and two other stable, very sick patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was a very taxing day,\u201d Webb added. \u201cI went home and just slept.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/webb-pic.webp_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-100403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/webb-pic.webp_.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/webb-pic.webp_.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/webb-pic.webp_.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Army Capt. Pitt\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u2018I\u2019m just tired\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While all the Army medical men and women at Kootenai are emphatically pro-vaccination, Brown and the others said they\u2019re not here to judge their patients\u2019 attitudes on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, patients are resistant to the treatment plan that will get them home, according to Capt. Nicole Barth, a nurse working in the hospital\u2019s progressive care unit, one severity level below the ICU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey just don\u2019t seem very grateful for care,\u201d said Barth, who deployed to a civilian Los Angeles hospital earlier this year to help with a prior surge. \u201cAnd they just are very obstinate to their treatment plan. And unfortunately, some of these patients, because they don\u2019t want to follow their treatment, go to higher level care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some patients will resist nurse entreaties for them to lie prone on their stomachs, a position that helps them breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll we do is want them to feel better and get better,\u201d Barth said. \u201cIt\u2019s just so frustrating when patients don\u2019t want to participate in their plan of care to leave the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/01\/28\/80-military-medical-personnel-to-support-texas-hospitals\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6492125.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">80 military medical personnel to support Texas hospitals<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Military personnel from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force are being sent to three hospitals in Texas to support efforts to combat the coronavirus and those suffering COVID-19.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being hospitalized with COVID is isolating, Barth said, so she tries to make small talk with her patients and found that football is a unifying topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disease makes her patients sleepy and fatigued, but they try to keep them awake during the daytime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some have difficulty talking because they get out of breath so easily, Barth added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome patients can\u2019t leave their bed because their oxygen dips way too much,\u201d she said. \u201cBut some of them can walk a little bit\u2026walk to the bathroom, but then they have to recover.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite being winded from a trip to the bathroom, some patients are heartened by the fact they can walk at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce they move from the ICU to us, they\u2019re just so thankful to walk to the bathroom,\u201d Barth said. \u201cThat\u2019s a huge feat for them. That\u2019s such a good feat for the day\u2026Two days ago, you couldn\u2019t even stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her deployment to Riverside hospital outside Los Angeles earlier this year, Barth said she often reflected on the day\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would sit there and just think a lot,\u201d she said. \u201cBut
