{"id":68770,"date":"2020-06-22T17:29:23","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T17:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/06\/22\/active-coronavirus-cases-among-va-patients-jump-36-percent-in-a-week\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T12:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:22:11","slug":"active-coronavirus-cases-among-va-patients-jump-36-percent-in-a-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2020\/06\/22\/active-coronavirus-cases-among-va-patients-jump-36-percent-in-a-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Active coronavirus cases among VA patients jump 36 percent in a week"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite a 36 percent increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/18\/despite-steady-rise-in-coronavirus-cases-va-officials-push-ahead-with-return-to-normal-operations\/\" target=_blank>active coronavirus cases among Veterans Affairs patients<\/a> in the last week, department officials continue to insist the rise should not raise concerns among veterans or public health experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday morning, VA officials reported<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accesstocare.va.gov\/Healthcare\/COVID19NationalSummary\" target=_blank> 2,332 active cases<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=_blank>fast-spreading illness<\/a> among patients at 129 department medical centers across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s up more than 500 cases in the last week alone, and 68 percent higher than the department\u2019s low of 1,390 active cases at the end of May. Eleven sites have added 20 or more active cases in the last seven days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 1,500 patients have died from complications related to the illness since the start of March.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/06\/09\/vas-protective-equipment-supplies-inadequate-for-second-wave-of-coronavirus-officials-warn\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20083466010733.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA\u2019s protective equipment supplies inadequate for second wave of coronavirus, officials warn<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Department hospitals have a 30-day supply of PPE, but officials say six months would be needed for a surge in cases this fall.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, when asked about similar but smaller increases in the active coronavirus case counts, VA press secretary Christina Noel said that those figures \u201care not the best measure of the department\u2019s performance fighting COVID-19, because more testing could also lead to higher case counts, including among those who lack symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She repeated those responses when asked about the new increases on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best measure of how COVID-19 is affecting VA patients is the number of hospitalizations, which are steady,\u201d she said. In March the hospitalization rate was 38 percent. In April, May and June, that number has been below 24 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department has acknowledged hot spots for the virus around the country, and Noel said that \u201call VA medical centers are taking precautions and considering the unique circumstances of their state and local markets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, which had just nine active cases in late May, now has 149. That facility has added 110 cases in the last week alone. VA officials would not release breakdowns on how many of those cases are outpatients, citing privacy concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The San Antonio site is one of 20 \u201clead sites\u201d identified by VA officials last month to resume some normal operations, including scheduling non-emergency in-person exams and allowing some non-essential personnel to work on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two other lead sites have seen large jumps in active case totals in recent days: The VA medical center in Charleston, S.C., has added 30 cases in the last week, and the VA center in Tucson, Ariz., has added 38 new cases this month. Ten others have seen an increase since the start of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noel said no changes or retractions related to the increased virus numbers are planned for those sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA has put in place rigorous safety measures at all of its facilities, including employee and Veteran COVID-19 screening, physical distancing and appropriate personal protective equipment such as face coverings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/05\/21\/suicide-risk-for-veterans-could-grow-as-coronavirus-crisis-winds-down\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6148209.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Suicide risk for veterans could grow as coronavirus crisis winds down<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Mental health experts warn that feelings of depression and anxiety will likely outlast the immediate isolation of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All VA health care sites have had a universal masking policy in place since April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After San Antonio, the VA medical centers with the most active sites are in Phoenix (123), Bay Pines in Florida (85), Houston (77), Tampa in Florida (71) and Orlando in Florida (70). Texas and Florida have been among the states which have seen the biggest increases in case numbers in recent days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 120,000 Americans have died from coronavirus in the last four months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 8 percent of patients in VA care who contract the virus have eventually died from the illness, well above the 6 percent death rate for cases among all Americans, according to the latest data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, VA officials have said the mortality data for their patients \u201ccannot be used to compare VA infection or mortality rates with the community because of differences in population risk, test
