But the number who win in November could be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s because more veteran candidates \u2014 especially younger ones \u2014 are running in up-for-grabs districts with more major party backing than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After decades of seeing the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/03\/23\/chuck-hagel-laments-the-dearth-of-veterans-in-key-national-security-roles\/\" target=\"_blank\">lawmakers with military experience<\/a> in the House and Senate steadily dwindle, analysts believe the coming years may see those figures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2016\/04\/17\/hundreds-of-veterans-are-winning-elections-at-the-state-level\/\" target=\"_blank\">hold steady or even increase slightly<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/10\/19\/here-are-the-172-veterans-running-for-congress-in-november\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4429025.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here are the 173 veterans running for Congress in November<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Bookmark this page for election night updates on all the races featuring veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a sizable jump in the number of credible candidates running now,\u201d said Seth Lynn, executive director of Veterans Campaign, which has tracked the number of veteran\u2019s vying for congressional seats for the last decade. \u201cThat\u2019s a significant change. We\u2019re no longer losing veterans in office like we were before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s mid-term election will feature 171 veterans with major party backing, a figure that Lynn and other campaign watchers said is about typical for the last few election cycles, in contrast to headlines all summer proclaiming a \u201csurge\u201d in veteran candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if every candidate won \u2014 an impossibility \u2014 the total number of lawmakers would pale in comparison to the 1970s, when nearly three in four members of Congress had previously served in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as recently as four years ago, outside experts wondered if the figure would ever reach one in five again, as older generations of military members began to retire and younger generations were slow to engage in national politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow it finally seems steady again,\u201d said Rebecca Burgess, manager for the Program on American Citizenship at the American Enterprise Institute, a leading conservative think tank in Washington. \u201cWe saw a small rise in the numbers last election, and now we\u2019re at the same level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/10\/15\/support-for-trump-is-fading-among-active-duty-troops-new-poll-shows\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4645429.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Support for Trump is fading among active-duty troops, new poll shows<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A new Military Times poll shows that troops today are evenly split in their views about President Trump.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, influential statesmen like John McCain and Chuck Hagel have lamented the shrinking numbers of veterans in Congress, noting that the shared military experience of past lawmakers helped bridge ideological differences on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynn said the demographics of the country make it impossible to return to the overwhelming veteran rates following the Vietnam War. \u201cFrankly, to see that number again we\u2019ll have to have another awful, large-scale war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even a small increase veterans\u2019 representation in Congress could help mend an increasingly fractured American political system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have around 100 veterans in office who decide they aren\u2019t completely wedded to party loyalty, that\u2019s a potentially powerful voting block,\u201d Burgess said. \u201cWe don\u2019t see veterans in Congress today identifying that way. But they could become a critical mass in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>How veterans are running<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference this cycle \u2014 possibly influencing public perception that more veterans have entered the political battlefield in 2018 \u2014 is that many of those veterans are better funded and more prominent than in years past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Close to 40 percent of the veterans who ran in primaries this year made it to the general election. Fewer are running third-party election bids. More are in races they have a credible chance of winning in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynn said in early spring 2016, fewer than 20 non-incumbent veterans running for Congress had raised at least $100,000 in competitive districts. This spring, that same group was up to 47, indicating a substantial rise in support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s like they\u2019re figuring out politics now,\u201d Burgess said. \u201cThe serious candidates are taking on the Democratic and Republican labels, and using that to get into office.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 170 major party candidates, a little more than one third \u2014 62 \u2014 are Democrats. That\u2019s up significantly from past election cycles, but not entirely unexpected, said Jon Soltz, chairman and co-founder of VoteVets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group has worked closely with Democratic Party leaders in the past to get veterans elected to office, and saw a significant uptick in efforts this cycle as more interest in the minority party\u2019s candidates grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/10\/19\/five-congressional-races-with-incumbent-veterans-to-watch-on-election-night\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18178700943706.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Five congressional races with incumbent veterans to watch on election night<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Sixty-seven incumbent lawmakers with military backgrounds are defending their congressional seats in the midterms.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing veterans as part of a Democratic Party that can reach more independent voters,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s allowing them to run in places that they haven\u2019t won in a long while.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the national races, VoteVets officials are reporting a surge in Democratic veterans running in state-level races as well, up about 11 percent from 2016 levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether that turns into a long-term strategy for the party remains to be seen. Dan Caldwell, executive director for Concerned Veterans for America (which has ties to conservative activists), notes that in past cycles where Democrats surged veteran candidates, those victories evaporated a few cycles later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, like Soltz and other election analysts, he has seen a change in the professionalism of campaigns run by younger veterans in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMilitary service is a positive attribute, but you can\u2019t run on just that and expect to win,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good way to get your foot in the door. (Bryan Woolston\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Vets in the next Congress<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost 45 percent of the veterans running for Congress this year served during the post-Sept. 11 era, and the number of younger veterans who win office is expected to rise again this cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other end of the generational spectrum, Congress still boasts two veterans who served in the 1950s: Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young and Kentucky Republican Rep. Hal Rogers, both up for re-election again this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lynn said more female veteran candidates won major party primaries this year than any past cycle. Five races to watch<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More female veterans are running for Congress this year than ever before.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And despite all the increases in veterans statistics, the number of senators with prior military experience could dip from the 2016 level even with a surge in House victories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the death of McCain and resignation of Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Cochran earlier this year, the number of veterans in the Senate sits at 18 out of 100. Three of them are up for re-election next month, including Florida Democrat Bill Nelson, who faces a difficult race with Republican Florida Gov.
