Ryan Dillon said, using the Arabic acronym for the extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Pentagon spokesman, Marine Maj. Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway, said the U.S. credited Iraqi security forces with the militants\u2019 capture \u201con the Iraq-Syria border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese arrests are a significant blow to ISIS as we continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/23\/us-airstrikes-decimate-nearly-150-isis-militants\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">remove its leadership and fighters from the battlefield<\/a>,\u201d Rankine-Galloway said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2018\/05\/08\/us-backed-syrian-fighters-spotted-in-mraps-prior-to-isis-assault\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Capture.JPG_76a431.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US-backed Syrian fighters spotted in MRAPs prior to ISIS assault<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Kurdish forces, called the People\u2019s Protection Units, or YPG, flaunted a mine-resistant ambush protected vehicle over social media Tuesday \u2014 an up-armored gun truck specifically designed to resist improvised explosive devices, but not previously authorized for provision to U.S.-backed forces.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISIS fighters no longer control significant pockets of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/02\/05\/us-begins-reducing-troops-in-iraq-after-victory-over-isis\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">territory inside Iraq<\/a>, but do maintain a grip inside Syria along Iraq\u2019s border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/03\/27\/us-coalition-want-to-shrink-role-in-iraq-but-isis-fighters-linger-in-the-desert\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. -led coalition <\/a>supported Iraqi ground forces and Syrian fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces in the more than three-year war against <span class=\"js-paste-start-ABJZAQELFBAODN4DTLRA63XMKA\"> ISIS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Iraqi forces retook the Iraqi city of Mosul from IS last summer, Syrian forces on the other side of the border claimed a series of swift victories, but the campaign was stalled recently when Turkey launched a cross-border raid into Syria\u2019s north.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month the coalition announced a drive to clear the final pockets of ISIS territory inside Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted about the anti-ISIS raid Thursday, saying those arrested were the \u201cfive most wanted\u201d ISIS \u201cleaders.\u201d It was unclear what criteria, if any, Trump was using to describe the ISIS operatives as the \u201cfive most wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. national security official said there were no indications that the operation had captured Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of ISIS who has long been the coalition\u2019s top target. The official wasn\u2019t authorized to discuss the targets publicly and requested anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year the Pentagon said that there were \u201csome indicators\u201d that al-Baghdadi was still alive a month after Russia claimed to have killed him in a strike near the Syrian city of Raqqa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the statements released Thursday from the president or the coalition named the <span class=\"js-paste-start-S3XL7Y2LXJHMPCJ2DQ73CBBEOA\">ISIS<span class=\"js-paste-end-S3XL7Y2LXJHMPCJ2DQ73CBBEOA\"> fighters arrested. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span class=\"js-paste-start-JH7B3PXVTZAHZKBJJNQVSBYTSQ\"> ISIS<span class=\"js-paste-end-JH7B3PXVTZAHZKBJJNQVSBYTSQ\"> fighters swept into Iraq in the summer of 2014, taking control of nearly a third of the country. At the height of the group\u2019s power their self-proclaimed caliphate stretched from the edges of Aleppo in Syria to just north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, with the group\u2019s physical caliphate largely destroyed, anti-ISIS operations are increasingly focused on targeting the extremists\u2019 remaining leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Lederman reported from Washington.
