More than 6.8 million Americans have contracted the virus in the last six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/09\/21\/coronavirus-complicates-efforts-to-help-homeless-veterans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_666894584132.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coronavirus complicates efforts to help homeless veterans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal figures on veterans homelessness are due out soon, but they won&#039;t reflect the impact of coronavirus on the problem.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of VA patients who have died from coronavirus reached 3,310 on Wednesday morning, up more than 300 in September alone. About 42 percent of those \u2014 around 1,400 \u2014 were inpatients at department medical centers at the time of death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have said that daily reports may not accurately reflect the timing of all of the deaths, since some facilities face delays in reporting fatalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the patient deaths, at least 56 department employees have died from coronavirus complications since March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active case counts are updated by the department multiple times each day, and topped 3,000 on Tuesday evening for the first time in nearly three weeks. That number had dropped as low as 2,543 on Sept. 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Wednesday\u2019s active case count still sits about 6 percent below the 3,302 total the department reported on Sept. 1, and less than half the peak of 6,213 cases reported on July 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite releasing the case count numbers each day, department officials have downplayed those figures and instead said that hospitalization rates are their preferred method of tracking coronavirus response.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/09\/01\/august-was-the-deadliest-month-so-far-for-va-coronavirus-patients-records-show\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RYW32DW23VCERNJQSYTDCRN7KA.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">August was the deadliest month so far for VA coronavirus patients, records show<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than 800 new patient deaths connected to coronavirus were reported last month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far in September, about 17 percent of active cases have required hospitalization, roughly the same as in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the more than 58,000 coronavirus cases handled by the department in the last six months, about 88 percent of the patients are veterans. The remainder are a mix of active-duty and reserve members, veterans&#8217; dependents, VA employees and civilians in local communities where health care resources have been overwhelmed by the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 700,000 coronavirus tests have been administered by the department
