Dan Crenshaw for his role in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/10\/house-chairman-calls-for-va-secretary-to-resign-over-handling-of-sex-assault-case\/\" target=_blank>controversial campaign by Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> to discredit a sexual assault victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., and the head of the House Armed Services Committee\u2019s panel on military personnel, blasted Crenshaw\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/10\/investigators-blast-va-secretarys-unprofessional-behavior-but-find-no-evidence-of-crimes\/\" target=_blank>alleged involvement in the scandal<\/a> as \u201cabhorrent\u201d and said her colleagues need to fully investigate the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf true, Rep. As Rep. Crenshaw has said repeatedly, any claim that he participated in a \u2018smear campaign\u2019 is absurd and totally false,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Saturday, Speier and other leaders on the Democratic Women\u2019s Caucus called for VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to resign for his conduct in the case, which stems from a September 2019 sexual assault complaint filed by a House staffer after an incident at the Washington D.C. VA medical center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staffer \u2014 Andrea Goldstein, a Naval reservist who works on the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee \u2014 said she was groped and verbally abused by a man while she was waiting in a public area of the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilkie promised an independent investigation into the case, but an inspector general report released last week criticized the VA secretary for \u201cunprofessional\u201d efforts to discredit Goldstein while that work was conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the report\u2019s release, 16 lawmakers (all Democrats) and 15 veterans organizations (including all of the so-called \u201cbig six\u201d veterans groups) have called for Wilkie to resign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Crenshaw\u2019s role in the case has received less public attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL who lost an eye during a bomb attack in Afghanistan, has publicly denied any involvement in the case. But investigators said that Wilkie claimed he was approached by the congressman at a December 2019 event where Crenshaw related that he had served in the same unit as Goldstein and implied she was a fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That allegation \u2014 circulated in emails by Wilkie \u2014 was used by multiple top officials to cast doubt on Goldstein\u2019s credibility, investigators said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Newsweek earlier this year, Crenshaw said he believes Wilkie confused separate events around that time frame where the two spoke, and denied attacking Goldstein at either event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has also accused Democratic leaders multiple times of creating \u201ca narrative\u201d to damage him politically.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/10\/investigators-blast-va-secretarys-unprofessional-behavior-but-find-no-evidence-of-crimes\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20140783642304.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Investigators blast VA secretary\u2019s \u2018unprofessional\u2019 behavior but find no evidence of crimes<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The report accuses senior officials of ignoring problems within the department to pursue political vendettas instead.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report said they did not find any evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Wilkie or Crenshaw and did not make any recommendations for improvements related to the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did label both men\u2019s actions as \u201cunprofessional and disparaging.\u201d However, investigators acknowledged that since Crenshaw would not speak to them, their characterization of the congressman\u2019s role was dependent on Wilkie\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ethics committee did not immediately respond to Speier\u2019s request. The panel is charged with investigating any alleged violations of the House rules \u201cor any related statutes by House members\u201d by lawmakers or staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
