{"id":74548,"date":"2022-09-17T23:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-09-17T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:42:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:42:04","slug":"veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/disaster\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/","title":{"rendered":"Veterans suicide rate may be double federal estimates, study suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/16\/defense-va-leaders-renew-calls-to-prevent-suicides-in-new-message\/\" target=\"_blank\">suicide among veterans<\/a> may be more than double what federal officials report annually because of undercounting related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/24\/marine-corps-army-have-disproportionate-amounts-of-substance-abuse-mental-health-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">drug overdose deaths<\/a> and service record errors, according to a new analysis released Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from America\u2019s Warrior Partnership, in a joint study with University of Alabama and Duke University, reviewed census death data from 2014 to 2018 for eight states and found thousands of cases of suspected or confirmed suicides not included in federal calculations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If those figures were to be repeated across the other states, it would push the veterans suicide rate from about 17 individuals a day (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/08\/veteran-suicides-decreased-7-percent-in-2019-to-lowest-level-in-12-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">the official estimate released by the Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> last year) to 44 veterans a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/16\/defense-va-leaders-renew-calls-to-prevent-suicides-in-new-message\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/t_b86a234fb02e42a6a29bad0787233d51_name_file_1920x1080_5400_v4_.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Defense, VA leaders renew calls to prevent suicides in new message<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Both departments have emphasized suicide prevention in recent years, with mixed results.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jim Lorraine, president of AWP and an Air Force veteran who works in health care, said the goal of the report is not to attack state and federal officials for the shortcomings but to point out areas where death records are incomplete or being overlooked, in an effort to find more solutions to the suicide problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are all preventable deaths,\u201d he said. \u201cThe number is less important than the methodology of tracking them and making sure we have an accurate count \u2026 that can lead us to prevention steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest category of overlooked deaths \u2014 about 60% of the uncounted cases, by the report\u2019s estimate \u2014 concern drug overdoses. Lorraine said that in the states his researchers reviewed, many drug deaths were classified as accidents or unknown intent even though indications were that the fatalities should be grouped alongside suicides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether it\u2019s an accident or a suicide doesn\u2019t really matter. The point is these are preventable,\u201d he said. \u201cSo that means we can address them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers also found numerous cases where deceased individuals\u2019 military history was incorrectly reported, either by coroners or family members. More often, those mistakes lead to undercounting the number of veteran deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To solve that issue, the group is pushing for more federal tools to access Defense Department records in an effort to confirm an individual\u2019s veterans status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing the overdose deaths will require new public health efforts from state and local officials, Lorraine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can build prevention strategies with the data that is currently available,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just needs to be merged and analyzed and then used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn one state, overdoses may be a higher concern than firearms. In another it might be firearms first.
