He was 101 years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin, of Sugarcreek Township, Ohio, was one of the first paratroopers to jump on D-Day during World War II. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/local\/wwii-veteran-and-paratrooper-jim-pee-wee-martin-dies-at-101\/7ER4EYIXSNC5NA6G57GNIAI2JY\/\" target=\"_blank\">local obituary<\/a> in the Dayton Daily News, he parachuted behind Utah Beach, near Saint-Come-du-Mont, at 12:30 a.m., which would make him one of the first soldiers to begin the D-Day invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to news of Martin\u2019s death, the 101st Airborne released a statement, saying that the number of soldiers that attended the services \u201cdisplays the profound effect Martin had on the military and our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428663.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">At the age of 101 Martin passed away peacefully in his home on Sept. 11, 2022. He was one of the last remaining Airborne &#8220;Toccoa Originals&#8221; of 1942. (Staff Sgt. Michael Eaddy\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are deeply saddened to hear of Jim \u2018Pee Wee\u2019 Martin\u2019s passing,\u201d a 101st Airborne spokesperson said in a statement. \u201cHe is a true legend in the 101st and will live on forever. This division was founded on the sacrifice, valor, audacity, and grit of Soldiers like Martin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin would later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/local\/wwii-veteran-and-paratrooper-jim-pee-wee-martin-dies-at-101\/7ER4EYIXSNC5NA6G57GNIAI2JY\/\" target=\"_blank\">fight against<\/a> the German counteroffensive in the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal for his actions during the war, the obituary read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also helped liberate concentration camps and capture Hitler\u2019s Bavarian home, the Berghof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the war ended, he would live in Sugar Creek, Ohio, with his wife from the late 1940s until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/local\/wwii-veteran-and-paratrooper-jim-pee-wee-martin-dies-at-101\/7ER4EYIXSNC5NA6G57GNIAI2JY\/\" target=\"_blank\">her death<\/a> in
