{"id":74938,"date":"2021-11-09T15:54:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T15:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/11\/09\/woman-cashed-dead-sisters-va-checks-for-over-a-decade-pleads-to-stealing-more-than-100k-in-benefits\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:11:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:11:43","slug":"woman-cashed-dead-sisters-va-checks-for-over-a-decade-pleads-to-stealing-more-than-100k-in-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2021\/11\/09\/woman-cashed-dead-sisters-va-checks-for-over-a-decade-pleads-to-stealing-more-than-100k-in-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman cashed dead sister\u2019s VA checks for over a decade, pleads to stealing more than $100k in benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Massachusetts woman faces up to 10 years in prison for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/10\/19\/army-vet-accused-of-faking-paralysis-to-get-1-million-in-va-benefits-using-some-to-buy-bmw\/\" target=\"_blank\">stealing<\/a> Department of Veterans Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2021\/10\/29\/former-va-medical-center-supervisor-sentenced-in-200k-kickback-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\">benefits<\/a> after pocketing checks delivered over more than a decade for her dead sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robin Calef, 63 of Brockton, Mass., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ma\/pr\/brockton-woman-pleads-guilty-stealing-veterans-affairs-funds\" target=\"_blank\">pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds<\/a> on Nov. 5 before a federal court in Boston, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calef  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/11\/05\/man-misused-over-100k-of-brothers-va-benefits-bought-harley-diamond-ring-and-pickup\/\" target=\"_blank\">stole<\/a> $102,289.62 in government funds intended for her deceased sister, according to Department of Justice documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In December 2006, Calef\u2019s sister, who was receiving monthly benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, passed away. Calef did not inform the VA that her sister died and the VA kept sending a monthly check. From December, 2006 until September, 2017, Calef continued to deposit the monthly allotment from the VA into a joint account she had with her sister, according to prosecutors. The DOJ said that over this period, Calef \u201cdid, on a recurring basis, knowingly and willfully embezzle\u201d $102,289.62 in veterans benefits from that joint account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calef, who will be sentenced on Mar. 1, 2022, faces up to 10 years in prison, supervised release for three years; and a fine of $250,000, according to court documents. Additionally, Calef is obligated to pay back the $102,289.62 she illegally received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, as part of her plea agreement, Calef has waived both the right to appeal her conviction and the right to challenge her sentence, including any court orders related to forfeiture, restitution, or supervised release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release did not contain any information about the sister\u2019s military service.
