{"id":75307,"date":"2022-11-06T16:19:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-06T16:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/06\/army-veteran-a-testimony-to-breast-cancer-for-men\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:07:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:07:12","slug":"army-veteran-a-testimony-to-breast-cancer-for-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2022\/11\/06\/army-veteran-a-testimony-to-breast-cancer-for-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Army veteran \u2018a testimony\u2019 to breast cancer for men"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FREDERICKSBURG, Va. \u2014 As the radiologist drew a tissue sample for a biopsy, Army veteran Boyd Elliott knew by the look on her face that something wasn\u2019t right, but he wasn\u2019t prepared for the news that followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had cancer \u2014 breast cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All he could think in that moment, when it seemed like the world had stopped turning, was that it couldn\u2019t be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be telling me I\u2019ve got breast cancer, it doesn\u2019t happen to men,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The disease is far more common among women, but about one of every 100 breast cancers diagnosed in the United States is in a man, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/10\/17\/the-enemy-is-lurking-in-our-bodies-women-veterans-say-toxic-exposure-caused-breast-cancer\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/breast-cancer-awarenress.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u201cThe enemy is lurking in our bodies\u201d \u2014 women veterans say toxic exposure caused breast cancer<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Military women say they face higher breast cancer rates from exposure, according to a feature reported by The War Horse.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One in 8 women will develop the disease in her lifetime, while the rate is 1 in 833 men, according to the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Elliott first noticed a hard lump on his left nipple in October 2020, the Spotsylvania County man \u201ckind of ignored it for a week or so, thinking it\u2019s going to go away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, it seemed to get bigger. (Tristan Lorei\/The Free Lance-Star via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that he\u2019s beyond the mammogram and biopsy, the complete mastectomy and year\u2019s worth of chemotherapy and other cancer drugs, Elliott is glad he listened to his partner of 55 years. His cancer was stage 2, and he learned the treatment would have been far more complicated if the disease had progressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, if his wife hadn\u2019t pushed him to see a doctor, would Elliott have continued to ignore what his body was telling him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProbably,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what a man does.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Catch it early\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In men or women, the \u201cbehavior\u201d of breast cancer tends to be the same, according to a 2020 report published on the National Library of Medicine website. It presents itself as a mass, has the same kind of tissue structure and responds similarly to treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But men tend to have a worse prognosis, according to the study, because by the time they see a doctor, the disease has advanced. Sometimes, it\u2019s entered the lymph nodes and spread throughout the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report noted the lack of awareness among men compared to efforts to encourage women to have annual mammograms and recognize the signs of breast cancer. Think about how many pink ribbons are placed each October during national breast cancer awareness month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, men are embarrassed to say they have breast cancer because, as a participant in one American study noted, \u201cmen don\u2019t have breasts, they have chests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elliott knows \u201cthe macho part\u201d can surface and that\u2019s why he agreed to be interviewed. He works at Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging and the director there, Pat Holland, told him he might help someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d like to let men know, it can happen and I\u2019m a testimony to that,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you ever feel something out of the ordinary, go get it checked out. It may be nothing to worry about, but if it is something that needs to be taken care of, catch it early.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018A good, good guy\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elliott got all his care at the VA facility in Richmond, the Hunter Holmes McGuire Hospital. He\u2019s had other procedures there and had nothing but rave reviews for the medical staff who helped him through every step of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the Department of Veterans Affairs was criticized in years past for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/04\/08\/va-secretary-promises-improvements-in-medical-wait-time-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">abominably slow service<\/a> \u2014 to the point that former service members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/04\/23\/health\/veterans-dying-health-care-delays\" target=\"_blank\">died before they were treated<\/a> \u2014 Elliott said things happened so quickly, it made his head spin.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/29\/proposal-aims-to-change-how-va-handles-womens-cancer-care\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2517643.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Proposal aims to change how VA handles women\u2019s cancer care<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Rep. Sylvia Garcia, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, hopes the pilot program will help female veterans get better access to cancer care.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a span of five weeks, he had his first consultation, got a mammogram and biopsy, had surgery and began chemotherapy \u2014 six doses over the course of eight months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chemo made him weak, claimed every hair on his body, sometimes left him nauseous and, for about a week and a half, made everything he ate taste like sugar, which was not a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Elliott, an Army veteran who did one tour in South Korea and worked as a civil engineer, kept going as much as his body would allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s been a fleet supervisor at Healthy Generations, overseeing about a dozen drivers and the agency\u2019s vans, for 13 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-workers say his pleasant temperament never changes, not even during the rigors of cancer treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe will go out of his way to make sure that everything goes right,\u201d Holland said. \u201cHe\u2019s just a good, good guy. He and Paula had a garden and he planted some pickling cucumbers and mixed together a recipe he thought would work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first batch didn\u2019t taste bad at all, so he made more and started sharing them with friends and co-workers, at church socials and with family. He tweaked the ingredients until he got the taste he wanted and people told him he should enter them in the fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He finally gave in, and in 2018, took a jar over to the Fredericksburg Agricultural Fair, paid a $1 entry fee and won a blue ribbon and a $5 premium. When people bugged him to take his fare to the State Fair of Virginia, he agreed in 2020\u2014and has won first prize three years in a row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the doors of a pickle cabinet, specially made for him by his brother-in-law, are four ribbons from Fredericksburg (three firsts and one second) and the three top State Fair awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019s won a prize every time he\u2019s entered. He enjoys the bragging rights as well as knowing he\u2019s made something that people enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re amazing, spectacular and we look forward to them every time we get them,\u201d Snyder said. \u201cThey\u2019re just perfect pickles, they\u2019re zesty and crisp, they have a nice scent, they\u2019re just delicious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elliott gives away about half of the 90 jars he makes a year including a pint apiece to the 25 or so employees at Healthy Generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I didn\u2019t, they\u2019d would probably kick me out,\u201d he said, sitting at his desk behind a pencil cup that announces: \u201cI\u2019m kinda a big dill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elliott recently scaled back his work schedule to three days a week\u2014not because of the cancer scare or his health. He said he feels fine. He has diabetes, but it\u2019s well-managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He would like to have a little more time with the woman who saved his life by making him go to the doctor. Plus, he said he just wants to \u201cslow down a little\u201d after three-quarters of a century in high gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He probably wants to make more
