{"id":75439,"date":"2022-12-21T17:18:57","date_gmt":"2022-12-21T17:18:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/12\/21\/all-wwii-vets-would-get-va-medical-benefits-under-budget-bill\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:35:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:35:49","slug":"all-wwii-vets-would-get-va-medical-benefits-under-budget-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2022\/12\/21\/all-wwii-vets-would-get-va-medical-benefits-under-budget-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"All WWII vets would get VA medical benefits under budget bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All living <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/07\/12\/date-set-to-honor-wwii-medal-of-honor-recipient-at-us-capitol\/\" target=\"_blank\">World War II<\/a> veterans would be eligible for Veterans Affairs medical services and nursing home care under language included in the federal budget bill expected to be approved by lawmakers this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The provision is one of numerous changes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/12\/16\/biden-urges-vets-to-apply-for-burn-pit-benefits-right-away\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA policies<\/a> included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/20\/va-to-get-300b-its-biggest-budget-ever-under-federal-spending-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">$1.7 trillion omnibus appropriations bill<\/a>, which also includes $303 billion for the department\u2019s operations in fiscal 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others include the establishment of a \u201cBuddy Check Week\u201d by VA to promote peer wellness checks for suicide prevention; expansion of student loan repayment programs for department mental health providers; and mandated new research on secondary post-traumatic stress issues for military spouses and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/12\/20\/va-to-get-300b-its-biggest-budget-ever-under-federal-spending-deal\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP17147488608597.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to get $300B, its biggest budget ever, under federal spending deal<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If approved, it will be the largest annual spending plan ever for the department.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials estimate about 167,000 WWII-era veterans are still living in America today. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that expansion of health and medical care to all World War II veterans could impact about 40,000 currently excluded from VA services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, eligibility is based on service connected conditions and financial status, as it is for veterans of other eras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But advocates have argued that given the WWII generation\u2019s advanced age and critical service to the country, all of those veterans should have the option of using the full slate of VA medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese men and women responded to an existential threat and were deemed the \u2018Greatest Generation,\u2019 largely because of their service,\u201d American Legion National Commander Vincent \u201cJim\u201d Troiola said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Legion has been pushing for the expansion of care eligibility since 2017. Troiola said the move is needed to provide \u201cbenefits that they have absolutely earned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress in the past has expanded similar benefits for some World War I veterans. President Joe Biden has signaled he will sign it into law as soon as it is finalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers need to pass either the full fiscal 2023 appropriations bill or a short-term budget extension by midnight Friday or risk triggering a partial government shutdown due to a lack of available funding for federal
