{"id":76108,"date":"2023-02-27T16:03:09","date_gmt":"2023-02-27T16:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/27\/iava-names-female-vet-as-top-leader-for-the-first-time\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:44:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:44:28","slug":"iava-names-female-vet-as-top-leader-for-the-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/27\/iava-names-female-vet-as-top-leader-for-the-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"IAVA names female vet as top leader for the first time"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iraq War veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/07\/advocates-draw-battle-lines-ahead-of-looming-va-abortion-fight\/\" target=\"_blank\">Allison Jaslow<\/a> was named the new CEO of I<a href=\"https:\/\/iava.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">raq and Afghanistan Veterans of America<\/a> on Monday, giving the organization its first female leader and making her the first openly gay individual to lead a major U.S. veterans organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jaslow, who previously served as executive director of the group, will replace departing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/11\/10\/iava-ceo-to-step-down-from-leadership-role\/\" target=\"_blank\">CEO Jeremy Butler<\/a>, who has served in the role since 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IAVA has been a key voice in veterans issues \u2014 particularly the younger generation \u2014 since its founding in 2004. Unlike most of the legacy veterans organizations, which have leadership changes annually, Jaslow is only the third CEO in the organization\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Group founder Paul Rieckhoff praised Jaslow as \u201cthe right leader to guide IAVA into its 20th year of impact.\u201d The two worked closely together in IAVA leadership before his departure four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/11\/09\/iava-ceo-to-step-down-from-leadership-role\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"207\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1403144275.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">IAVA CEO to step down from leadership role<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Jeremy Butler has lead the organization since 2019.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIAVA\u2019s groundbreaking work has always been a team effort,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cAllison has been a part of that team as a staff member, a board member, and no one will be more dedicated to the organization\u2019s work as its next CEO.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her previous work with the group, Jaslow spearheaded the organization\u2019s \u201cShe Who Borne the Battle\u201d campaign, which highlighted the contributions and needs of women veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019ll take over as debate over changing the Department of Veterans Affairs male-focused motto continues. Advocacy groups have pushed for more inclusive language for years, but administration officials have not yet made any changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jaslow served two combat tours in Iraq with the Army. She has also worked in multiple Capitol Hill posts and recently served as an adjunct professor at Duke University\u2019s Sanford School of Public Policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/03\/12\/wounded-women-veterans-face-higher-levels-of-loneliness-isolation-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3282514.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Wounded women veterans face higher levels of loneliness, isolation: report<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials say the new survey from Wounded Warrior Project shows a need for more transition programs focused on women.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Jaslow said that she is \u201chonored and humbled to have the opportunity to be in the fight again for such an important mission, to lead IAVA into its next decade of impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women veterans are one of the fastest growing groups within the veterans community in America today, projected to make up nearly one in every five veterans in America by 2040. That number was just one in every 20 veterans in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Department of Veterans Affairs has received criticism in recent years for uneven progress in providing medical care and community support specifically for women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jaslow\u2019s first official day in the role will be March 15. IAVA officials are scheduled to present their legislative priorities for the year to lawmakers at joint House and Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committees hearing on March
