{"id":76266,"date":"2023-02-16T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/16\/va-awards-20-million-in-prizes-for-vets-suicide-prevention-projects\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:16:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:16:03","slug":"va-awards-20-million-in-prizes-for-vets-suicide-prevention-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/16\/va-awards-20-million-in-prizes-for-vets-suicide-prevention-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"VA awards $20 million in prizes for vet suicide prevention projects"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Mayank Mishra, preventing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/19\/veterans-suicides-drop-to-lowest-rate-since-2006\/\" target=\"_blank\">veteran suicides<\/a> starts with improving internet access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of just saying, \u2018Here\u2019s an app that can help,\u2019 we have to make sure the digital infrastructure is there,\u201d said Mishra, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.televeda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Televeda<\/a>, an Arizona-based firm focused on ways to prevent social isolation in vulnerable communities \u201cBeing able to access care is just as important as the mental health care itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Televeda\u2019s Project H\u00f3zh\u00f3, which is focused on bringing broadband services and culturally relevant mental health support to Native American reservations in the southwest United States, was recognized Thursday as one of two first-place winners of the Department of Veterans\u2019 Affairs\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/05\/25\/va-offers-3-million-prize-for-ideas-to-stop-veteran-suicides\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mission Daybreak<\/a> challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prize brings with it $3 million in funding for the project\u2019s suicide prevention efforts, money that Mishra said will be immediately invested into infrastructure and mental health assistance work already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith this, we expect to see results by the end of the year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/05\/25\/va-offers-3-million-prize-for-ideas-to-stop-veteran-suicides\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4018590.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA offers $3 million prize for ideas to stop veteran suicides<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Mission Daybreak initiative will look for new approaches to address veterans&#039; mental health issues.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite years of focus on the issue, reducing suicides among veterans has been an elusive goal for policy planners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, VA officials announced the number of veterans suicides in 2020 (the most recent year for which data is available) dropped to just below 17 deaths a day, the lowest rate since 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That still translated into more than 6,100 preventable deaths that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mission Daybreak initiative was launched last May as a way to develop new suicide prevention strategies through a public competition. The department awarded $20 million in prizes to 40 firms in recent months, including payouts of $1 million or more to five exceptional projects recognized this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans suicide prevention will require a public health approach, and everyone has a role to play,\u201d said Dr. Matthew Miller, executive director for suicide prevention at VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[These prize winners] are well-positioned to be deployed across a variety of settings and communities, and so doing, they\u2019ll enforce everyone\u2019s role in suicide prevention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nonprofit group Stop Soldier Suicide claimed the other first-place prize for its <a href=\"https:\/\/stopsoldiersuicide.org\/blackboxproject\" target=\"_blank\">Black Box Project<\/a>, which analyzes data from digital devices of veterans who died by suicide to \u201cdevelop machine learning models that can identify never-before-known risk patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes things like seeing shifts in sleeping patterns, use of more aggressive language in text messages, and other disruptions in normal habits. The goal is to find indicators of when veterans may be facing increased stress and may be open to intervention or support services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chris Ford, CEO of the group, calls the work \u201csuicide intelligence\u201d and said the $3 million prize will cover a significant portion of the $10 million project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve developed trust and empathy with these families, so they share things with us that they might not with VA,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, VA has taken a step away from needing ownership and instead aimed for reaching the common good here in the fastest way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said they will provide some support with the award-winning projects, but only if such a move makes sense for the department and the outside groups. Honorees were chosen in part for their ability to provide verifiable, independent and positive results to the problem of veteran suicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/19\/veterans-suicides-drop-to-lowest-rate-since-2006\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6829847.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans suicides drop to lowest rate since 2006<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But veterans are still significantly more likely to die by suicide than their civilian peers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other winners include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>ReflexAI, an artificial intelligence tool that assists with Veterans Crisis Line training ($1 million);<\/li><li>Sentinel, a mobile app focused on safe storage of firearms ($1 million);<\/li><li>Battle Buddy, a mental health app with daily check-ins for at-risk veterans ($1 million);<\/li><li>Cabana, by Even Health, is a virtual reality-based group support platform ($500,000);<\/li><li>NeuroFlow is a digital care platform ($500,000);<\/li><li>Overwatch Project is a peer-intervention program ($500,000);<\/li><li>OxfordVR\u2019s gameChange, a virtual reality game platform to help veterans in crisis ($500,00);<\/li><li>Team Guidehouse, a real-time health data platform ($500,000).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on each of the winners is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.missiondaybreak.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA\u2019s Mission Daybreak web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said they are considering another similar contest in the future, but do not have any immediate plans for such a move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 988 or 1-800-273-8255.
