{"id":76900,"date":"2022-08-31T16:49:16","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T16:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/31\/long-covid-symptoms-could-mean-major-health-problems-for-vets\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T16:07:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T16:07:59","slug":"long-covid-symptoms-could-mean-major-health-problems-for-vets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2022\/08\/31\/long-covid-symptoms-could-mean-major-health-problems-for-vets\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Long COVID\u2019 symptoms could mean major health problems for vets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers believe that tens of thousands of veterans nationwide may be suffering from long-term effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 infection<\/a> and are urging physicians to more closely monitor their patients for indications of lingering medical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new guidebook from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/08\/30\/va-extends-debt-collection-relief-until-the-end-of-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a>\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.va.gov\/n-coronavirus\/docs\/Whole-Health-System-Approach-to-Long-COVID_080122_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Long COVID Integrated Project Team<\/a>, publicly released on Tuesday, warns that defining and diagnosing which patients have \u201clong COVID\u201d remains difficult, because of the wide range of signs and symptoms associated with the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/08\/29\/troops-can-now-get-novavax-as-a-covid-19-vaccine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22159814230246.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Troops can now get Novavax as a COVID-19 vaccine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Novavax is not made with, nor tested on, cells descended from fetal tissue. It also doesn\u2019t use mRNA to deliver the vaccine into cells.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it also emphasizes that medical providers \u2014 both within the VA and outside it \u2014 need to keep the virus in mind as patients return for regular health appointments and detail complaints that could point to ongoing, serious health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA research has led to key findings about Long COVID, including that patients who recovered from COVID-19 were significantly more likely to have heart and vascular disease a year after infection; patients who contracted COVID-19 had a 60% higher risk of mental health challenges one year after recovering; and more,\u201d department officials said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The document release came just one day ahead of federal regulators approving new COVID-19 booster shots targeting the newest strains of the virus. Delivery of those vaccines is expected to begin in coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 615,000 veterans connected to the VA health care system have contracted coronavirus in the 30 months since the American pandemic began. Of those, more than 22,000 have died from complications related to the illness, with around 5,000 deaths in 2022 alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers say they believe more than 40,000 veterans connected to VA health care are suffering from long COVID, based on reviews of department cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/08\/30\/va-extends-debt-collection-relief-until-the-end-of-2022\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22123454973865.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA extends debt collection relief until the end of 2022<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans facing financial hardship were facing a late September deadline to resume repayment of the debt.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past studies have shown that about 2% of coronavirus cases result in lingering health issues more than four weeks after an initial diagnosis. VA patients have been more prone to contracting COVID than the American public because they are generally older and have more underlying health complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other studies have shown that 48% of patients had dizziness or headaches four weeks after contracting the virus, and up to 16% had loss of smell or taste two months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA researchers have been among the national leaders in the long-term effects of COVID-19 infections, with 20 separate long COVID programs established
