{"id":77800,"date":"2023-02-10T20:35:57","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T20:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/10\/exec-overseeing-va-health-records-overhaul-to-leave-this-month\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:48:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:48:14","slug":"exec-overseeing-va-health-records-overhaul-to-leave-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/10\/exec-overseeing-va-health-records-overhaul-to-leave-this-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Official overseeing VA health records overhaul to leave this month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top Veterans Affairs official overseeing its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/31\/lawmakers-demand-fixes-in-va-health-records-before-any-more-rollouts\/\" target=\"_blank\">embattled electronic health records overhaul<\/a> effort will step down at the end of the month, department leaders announced Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/07\/27\/vas-16-billion-health-records-overhaul-could-be-scrapped-if-fixes-arent-made\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Terry Adirim<\/a>, director of VA\u2019s Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office, will depart Feb. 25 to \u201cpursue other opportunities\u201d outside the department, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/07\/15\/former-ncaa-executive-confirmed-as-vas-second-in-command\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Deputy Secretary Donald Remy<\/a> said in a message to employees. She has been in that post since December 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adirim\u2019s departure was <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/va-electronic-health-record-modernization-program-director-terry-adirim-to-depart\/\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by FedScoop<\/a> earlier on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have not announced a permanent replacement for her. Dr. Neil Evans, senior adviser for the Office of Information and Technology, will serve as acting program director until a candidate is identified, Remy said in his message.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/06\/oracle-exec-va-health-records-overhaul-is-only-real-option-for-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2089484.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Oracle exec: VA health records overhaul is only real option for vets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The company behind VA&#039;s controversial health records project insists the work can still be finished in a way that benefits veterans and taxpayers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes amid significant scrutiny and controversy surrounding the records modernization program, a 10-year, $16 billion effort that has drawn the ire of lawmakers and some VA staffers over the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work began in 2018 and has already cost about $4 billion. But last October, VA leaders announced that all future deployments of Oracle Cerner\u2019s Millennium records platform would be delayed until at least June 2023 \u201cto address challenges with the system and make sure it is functioning optimally for veterans and for VA health care personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The software has only been deployed to five medical centers out of the 171 in the VA healthcare system. But physicians at those sites have reported numerous frustrations and serious concerns with the change, and a VA inspector general report found at least 148 veterans were harmed by medical record mistakes and shortfalls at those sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, Oracle executives defended the system as the only reasonable path ahead for putting servicemembers and veterans onto the same health records platform, and promised improvements in system operations and usability in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have not publicly committed to a restart date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his message to employees, Remy acknowledged that the records upgrade so far \u201chas been challenging for VA\u2019s health care personnel and has not provided the enhanced outcomes that veterans expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also praised Adirim\u2019s work on the project, calling her an effective and caring leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThrough her efforts and leadership, VA has been making progress in these areas by improving standardization and usability of the system,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/01\/31\/lawmakers-demand-fixes-in-va-health-records-before-any-more-rollouts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Mann-Grandstaff-Department-of-Veterans-Affairs-Medical-Center-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmakers demand fixes in VA health records before any more rollouts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">New legislation would block further deployments of the controversial system until VA leaders can promise permanent improvements.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evans previously served as VA\u2019s top acting official for technology and currently works as chief officer for the Office of Connected Care, which oversees issues like VA telehealth options and other digital health care capabilities.
