But we\u2019re working to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/01\/24\/white-house-names-latest-pick-to-lead-veterans-benefits-operations\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/JoshJacobs.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">White House names latest pick to lead veterans benefits operations<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">If confirmed, the move will give VA confirmed officials in its top leadership spots for the first time since early 2017.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobs, who currently oversees the job of undersecretary for benefits in an acting role, made the comments in response to concerns from lawmakers that veterans seeking compensation under the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (better known as the PACT Act) may be turning to outside firms that charge fees in order to decipher the sweeping law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PACT Act, passed last summer, is expected to provide new health care and disability payouts for more than 3 million veterans nationwide. Already, the department has processed about 180,000 claims under the new law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But getting those claims completed can take months, and often requires VA staffers to request additional information if forms and processes aren\u2019t complete. Outside veterans groups can provide assistance in filing the claims, but critics have charged that too few free options are available to cover the expected demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobs noted that VA officials held a PACT Act awareness week in December to help highlight the new law and its benefits, and said that officials are eyeing another such event in coming months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to do more of that, but we can\u2019t do it ourselves,\u201d he told senators. \u201cWe have to do it in partnership with veterans service organizations, with county veteran\u2019s service officers, with state departments of Veterans Affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/02\/14\/vets-groups-push-for-another-hefty-increase-to-vas-budget-next-year\/\" elderly vets and improve aging buildings.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he also promised to look for additional improvements to the claims process if he is confirmed to the VBA leadership post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to drive more focus on the veteran experience,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause veterans often don\u2019t know about the process, they don\u2019t know what to look out for in terms of predatory actors, and they can make the wrong decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we need to continue to proactively get information out so that they have resources that are going to help them for free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobs \u2014 who previously worked as deputy staff director for the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee \u2014 received little opposition from the committee and is expected to be confirmed to the senior VA post in coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that happens, it will mark the first time that VA has had Senate-confirmed leaders in all
