Edmund Rucker<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I support the name change. It\u2019s long overdue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruckers have been in the United States since the late 1690<b>s<\/b>, and rose to become part of the elite Southern society prior to the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As kids, we\u2019re told the story of Peter Rucker, a French Huguenot who was shipwrecked near the mouth of the James River in Virginia. He swam to shore. Peter and his children lived in Essex County, located near<b> <\/b>Virginia\u2019s Rappahannok River. Their children moved west, living near Culpepper and Charlottesville. They founded Ruckersville, Virginia, and the family grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some members moved to Georgia and founded another town, Ruckersville, Georgia. Others moved to Alabama, North Carolina, and Kentucky. They married into prominent Southern families like the Cobbs, Embrys, Tinsleys and Lamars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the war started, Ruckers fought for the Confederate States of America. Edmund Rucker, Fort Rucker\u2019s namesake, served in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/did-forrest-really-threaten-braggs-life\/\" target=\"_blank\">General Nathan Bedford Forrest\u2019s Cavalry Corps<\/a>. He lost an arm in the battle of Brentwood, near Nashville, Tennessee. Rucker lived in Birmingham after the war, operating large coal and iron mines. The Army named a base in his honor in 1942.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/03\/24\/the-cost-to-rename-9-confederacy-honoring-army-bases-has-doubled\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Fort-Polk-front-gate-lsn.itc_htmldb.jfif_.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The cost to rename 9 Confederacy-honoring Army bases has doubled<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Army garrisons won&#039;t have to foot the bill for all the renaming, general says.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a kid, I was always puzzled that the Department of Defense chose to name a base after my Confederate cousin. Rucker led men into battle against U.S. troops and men died because of his actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I joined the Coast Guard in the late 1990s. I swore an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. With hand held high, I recited the oath and pondered yet again, why is there an Army base named after a family member who committed treason?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new name of the base will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/265188\/home_of_army_aviation_to_be_redesignated_fort_novosel\" target=\"_blank\">Fort Novosel, named for Michael Novosel, a Medal of Honor recipient who fought in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam<\/a>. Novosel\u2019s connection to the Vietnam War is important to me because my father ret. Army Colonel T.W. Rucker and my uncle Captain D. Rucker also served in Vietnam. They all fought for the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal assets should be named for those who fight and fought for the United States. My cousin Edmund Rucker did neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I welcome next week\u2019s name change and I respectfully ask Defense Department leaders to stop naming assets after Confederates. Please name roads, streets, buildings, bases, and ships after men and women who served the United States with honor and distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usni.org\/people\/denise-krepp\" target=\"_blank\"><i>K.
