{"id":80538,"date":"2024-11-12T15:03:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T15:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/11\/12\/va-plans-to-drop-co-pays-for-all-telehealth-services\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:41:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:41:42","slug":"va-plans-to-drop-co-pays-for-all-telehealth-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2024\/11\/12\/va-plans-to-drop-co-pays-for-all-telehealth-services\/","title":{"rendered":"VA plans to drop co-pays for all telehealth services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs leaders plan to eliminate all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/09\/18\/va-to-resume-collecting-pharmacy-co-pays-for-thousands-of-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">co-pays<\/a> for telehealth services and award grants for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/22\/va-telehealth-appointments-may-complicate-vets-community-care-options\/\" target=\"_blank\">telehealth clinics<\/a> in rural areas, part of ongoing efforts to expand virtual care options within the medical care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-proposes-to-eliminate-copays-for-telehealth-expand-access-to-telehealth-for-rural-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\">an announcement Monday<\/a>, department officials said the moves could help \u201clower costs and expand access to care for all those who served.\u201d Both proposals will have to go through a months-long rulemaking process before either could be put into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWaiving co-pays for telehealth services and launching this grant program are both major steps forward in ensuring veterans can access health care where and when they need it,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2023\/11\/08\/mcdonough-wants-va-to-reach-every-veteran-in-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA is the best and most affordable care in America for veterans. With these steps, we can make it easier for veterans to access their earned VA health care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/09\/18\/va-to-resume-collecting-pharmacy-co-pays-for-thousands-of-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23241010218588.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to resume collecting pharmacy co-pays for thousands of vets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Co-payments for outpatient pharmacy services have been paused for several years at some locations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outpatient co-pays for VA medical appointments \u2014 in person or online \u2014 can be up to $50 per session. But those fees can often be waived due to a veteran\u2019s disability status, or the type of appointment, or because of a veteran\u2019s financial hardships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposed grant program \u2014 which would operate through the existing Accessing Telehealth through Local Area Stations (ATLAS) program \u2014 would provide funding to nonprofits and private businesses to offer veterans \u201ccomfortable, private spaces equipped with high-speed internet access and the technology to meet with VA providers remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money could also be used to train on-site personnel to help with connecting physicians and patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telehealth has become a significant part of the department\u2019s health care portfolio since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. In fiscal 2023, more than 2.4 million veterans \u2014 about 40% of the total number of patients in the VA health care system \u2014 had at least one virtual medical appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department leaders have promised to keep expanding those options while still ensuring that veterans who prefer face-to-face appointments have that opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, VA officials announced an expansion of tele-emergency care nationwide. In a separate move, the department also dropped co-pays for veterans\u2019 first three outpatient mental health care visits annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No timeline has been
