{"id":81154,"date":"2024-03-29T15:26:51","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T15:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/03\/29\/hip-replacements-other-orthopedic-devices-not-properly-tracked-by-va\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:19:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:19:12","slug":"hip-replacements-other-orthopedic-devices-not-properly-tracked-by-va","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/veterans\/2024\/03\/29\/hip-replacements-other-orthopedic-devices-not-properly-tracked-by-va\/","title":{"rendered":"Hip replacements, other orthopedic devices not properly tracked by VA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a veteran\u2019s artificial hip or shoulder reconstruction gets recalled because of manufacturing problems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/03\/14\/va-sets-new-goal-of-housing-41000-veterans-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> may not be able to notify them, according to a warning from a government watchdog released this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/assets\/d24106621.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Government Accountability Office<\/a> said despite widespread use of non-biological implantable medical devices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/03\/26\/va-patient-numbers-jump-after-efforts-to-improve-medical-access\/\" target=\"_blank\">among VA patients<\/a>, the department lacks an effective tracking system for many of the items, leading to health and safety concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Veterans Health Administration has not fully assessed its ability across all specialties to ensure that non-biological implantable medical devices can be effectively tracked back to individual patients,\u201d GAO officials wrote in a report released Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSome VA medical center officials said that if they needed to identify patients affected by a safety issue with an orthopedic implantable device, it would require a time-consuming search of the medical records.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/03\/26\/va-patient-numbers-jump-after-efforts-to-improve-medical-access\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1237664778.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA patient numbers jump after efforts to improve medical access<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Veterans Affairs medical sites saw their patient numbers spike after a five-month effort to improve access and delivery of health care.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators noted that the problem does not extend to cardiac devices like pacemakers or implantable defibrillators, where such recalls and problems demand immediate attention. Those items are monitored and tracked meticulously by VA staffers, the GAO found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But other medical devices are not accounted for in the same way. While the department tracks total numbers of items in use, the specific equipment is not stored in a database with the veteran using it, leaving a gap in information if problems arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials said they implanted more than 1 million such devices in veteran patients from 2019 to 2023. The GAO said there have been four major recalls to hip replacements and other implantable orthopedic medical equipment in the last three years, although the actions covered fewer than 30,000 items nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, officials warned, \u201cwhen an implantable medical device fails, the patient with that device can face serious health risks if the failure is not addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, VA officials promised to review the issue and address needed changes by March 2025. They also said that work may entail \u201cestablishing new national program offices or reorganizing current program offices\u201d to conduct the work, which may require additional funding from
