{"id":82364,"date":"2025-05-09T19:22:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T19:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/09\/pentagon-orders-military-to-pull-all-library-books-on-diversity\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:44:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:44:52","slug":"pentagon-orders-military-to-pull-all-library-books-on-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/05\/09\/pentagon-orders-military-to-pull-all-library-books-on-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon orders military to pull all library books on diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has ordered all military leaders and commands to pull and review all of their library books that address diversity, anti-racism or gender issues by May 21, according to a memo issued to the force on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the broadest and most detailed directive so far on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s campaign to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/03\/07\/war-heroes-military-firsts-among-26000-images-flagged-in-dei-purge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/03\/07\/war-heroes-military-firsts-among-26000-images-flagged-in-dei-purge\/\">rid the military<\/a> of diversity and equity programs, policies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2025\/01\/27\/air-force-reinstates-course-with-tuskegee-airmen-video-after-outcry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2025\/01\/27\/air-force-reinstates-course-with-tuskegee-airmen-video-after-outcry\/\">instructional materials<\/a>. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt, the Air Force&#039;s first female fighter pilot, and the World War II-era WASPs have been pulled offline.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Associated Press obtained a copy of the memo, which was signed Friday by Timothy Dill, who is performing the duties of the defense undersecretary for personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educational materials at the libraries \u201cpromoting divisive concepts and gender ideology are incompatible with the Department\u2019s core mission,\u201d the memo states, adding that department leaders must \u201cpromptly identify\u201d books that are not compatible with that mission and sequester them by May 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By then, the memo says, additional guidance will be provided on how to cull that initial list and determine what should be removed and \u201cdetermine an appropriate ultimate disposition\u201d for those materials. It does not say what will happen to the books or whether they will be stored away or destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the memo, a temporary Academic Libraries Committee set up by the department will provide information on the review and decisions about the books. That panel provided a list of search terms to use in the initial identification of the books to be pulled and reviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search terms include: affirmative action, anti-racism, critical race theory, discrimination, diversity, gender dysphoria, gender identity and transition, transgender, transsexual and white privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early last month the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/04\/02\/naval-academy-removes-nearly-400-books-from-library-in-new-dei-purge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/04\/02\/naval-academy-removes-nearly-400-books-from-library-in-new-dei-purge\/\">removed nearly 400 books<\/a> from its library after being told by Hegseth\u2019s office to get rid of those that promote DEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two weeks later, the Army and Air Force libraries were told to go through their stacks to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/04\/16\/army-air-force-libraries-ordered-to-review-books-for-dei-material\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/04\/16\/army-air-force-libraries-ordered-to-review-books-for-dei-material\/\">books related to diversity, equity and inclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Academy\u2019s purge led to the removal of books on the Holocaust, histories of feminism, civil rights and racism, and Maya Angelou\u2019s famous autobiography, \u201cI Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,\u201d based on <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/Apr\/04\/2003683009\/-1\/-1\/0\/250404-LIST%20OF%20REMOVED%20BOOKS%20FROM%20NIMITZ%20LIBRARY.PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/Apr\/04\/2003683009\/-1\/-1\/0\/250404-LIST%20OF%20REMOVED%20BOOKS%20FROM%20NIMITZ%20LIBRARY.PDF\">the list of 381 books<\/a> that have been taken out of its library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to Angelou\u2019s award-winning book, the list includes \u201cMemorializing the Holocaust,\u201d which deals with Holocaust memorials;
