Earlier this month, Johnson said his city will not \u201ccower or bend or be intimidated by [Trump\u2019s] attempts to divide and conquer our communities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson has said that investment in social services like mental health care and family assistance are making positive changes in Chicago\u2019s crime rate. But Trump \u2014 and conservative activists \u2014 have pushed for military involvement to clean up what they insist are urban areas on the brink of chaos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly 2,000 National Guard troops are currently deployed to Washington, D.C., with about 800 from the city\u2019s ranks of Guardsmen. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has publicly objected to the federal takeover. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t think the National Guard should be used for law enforcement,\u201d Bowser said during a press conference Monday. \u201cCalling men and women from their homes, their jobs, and their families \u2014 they have to be used for mission-specific items that benefit the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/08\/21\/trump-plans-to-patrol-dc-with-national-guard-on-thursday\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/08\/21\/trump-plans-to-patrol-dc-with-national-guard-on-thursday\/\">met with dozens of Guardsmen and law enforcement personnel<\/a> on Thursday, thanking and praising them for their work thus far. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier on Friday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memo authorizing Guard troops deployed in Washington, D.C., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/08\/22\/hegseth-signs-memo-authorizing-arming-of-guard-in-dc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/08\/22\/hegseth-signs-memo-authorizing-arming-of-guard-in-dc\/\">to carry weapons if their mission requires it<\/a>.
