The Philippines’ defense secretary has announced an end to the ISIS siege of Marawi, but what did the militant group have planned for the region?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n

CLARK, Philippines \u2014 The last militants in the city of Marawi, Philippines, were declared \u201cfinished\u201d on Monday, ending a five-month siege that raised worry of the group gaining a foothold in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Philippines\u2019 defense secretary, Delfin Lorenzana, said the defeat of pro-Islamic State group militants in Marawi helps prevent the spread of extremism in Asia. Some of the militants were from other countries, including Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He made the declaration after the last group of gunmen were found dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
