Army Times spoke with Weimer ahead of the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual conference, but the conversation was barely underway before the Army\u2019s top NCO poked fun at himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The razor stunt was a reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2023\/09\/06\/shaving-the-sergeant-major-of-the-army-theres-an-app-for-that\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Reddit user\u2019s viral \u201cBeard Eraser\u201d game<\/a>, which lets motivated player-warriors help Weimer, who \u201cwoke up undisciplined today,\u201d get a fresh shave. The SMA described it as \u201chilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2023\/09\/06\/shaving-the-sergeant-major-of-the-army-theres-an-app-for-that\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-09-06-at-12.46.10-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Shaving the Sergeant Major of the Army? There\u2019s an app for that.<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The game lets you &quot;help SMA Weimer become a better soldier and a better man by shaving off his beard.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation with Weimer covered his approach to garrison discipline \u2014 his previous comments about which sparked the anxiety that led to Beard Eraser \u2014 as well as training tempo. The below interview was edited for length and clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>AT: I\u2019m glad you appreciated the shaving game \u2014 soldiers do the craziest things. But that app grew out of a place of anxiety. Soldiers are desperate to hear more details from you about what you envision for the return to standards and discipline, which you\u2019ve discussed in broad terms thus far.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a macro level, we are all in on the four focus areas that Gen. [Randy] George and I have been talking about [warfighting, delivering ready combat formations, undergoing continuous transformation, and strengthening the profession of arms]. We\u2019re gonna spend a lot of time talking about warfighting, because it\u2019s the very reason we exist \u2014 there\u2019s no other reason we exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You really trace it all back to: how disciplined are you as an individual? How disciplined are you as an organization? Until you understand what the individual\u2019s discipline is, you really don\u2019t have the sum of the whole organization. You\u2019re gonna see me spend a lot of time on the noncommissioned officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discipline is usually measured with clearly defined standards, right? If the standards aren\u2019t clearly defined, and if the standards aren\u2019t clearly modeled, and if the standards aren\u2019t clearly upheld, then we\u2019re not nearly as disciplined as we think. The more senior you get, it evolves, but you don\u2019t take anything off the plate. It\u2019s not like you become the sergeant major of the Army and all of the sudden haircuts don\u2019t matter and doing PT stops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re asking soldiers or NCOs to live and uphold the standard, they have got to be clear \u2014 and not confusing. We can use technology \u2026 that can help us clear up any confusion on what a standard is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>AT: Creating a shared understanding across the force is challenging to achieve at scale. Where are you hoping to improve on messaging about standards and discipline in order to bring everybody on the same page?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where I love technology, but what I\u2019ve learned over time is if we don\u2019t have governance with how we\u2019re using technology \u2014 the information space is a great example of this \u2014 we actually can create more confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>AT: There seems to be rising concern among the force that there\u2019s a pretty high training tempo and there\u2019s lots of time away from home. What are your thoughts about op tempo and the force right now \u2014 what do you think is the right balance there?<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not going to disagree on the op tempo. It\u2019s a very squishy term, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The [Army] Secretary and the Chief [of Staff], we\u2019ve talked about how we should call it \u201chead-on-pillow-time.\u201d How many nights and days was my head not on my pillow at home? Because, I could never leave Fort Liberty and still not be home for two weeks because we\u2019re in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Units are training really hard at home station now \u2014 we should be training hard \u2014 but there\u2019s a balance. I think that\u2019s what the soldiers are getting at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re asking commanders to take a thorough look at all the exercises they are doing and making sure we\u2019re assessing what really needs to be done. We acknowledge how much we\u2019re asking our soldiers to do, and it\u2019s having an impact in every theater we\u2019re in, but the [overseas] demands aren\u2019t going down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we\u2019re really taking a hard look at what we\u2019re asking our soldiers to do and the stress that it can be putting on their families. I don\u2019t have a secret answer to roll out. It\u2019s going to have to be leadership starting at the [Forces Command] level at echelon to be ruthless with prioritizing what we\u2019re
