{"id":88408,"date":"2024-07-18T19:11:30","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T19:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/07\/18\/navy-missile-intercepts-target-using-armys-new-missile-defense-radar\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T01:08:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T01:08:37","slug":"navy-missile-intercepts-target-using-armys-new-missile-defense-radar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2024\/07\/18\/navy-missile-intercepts-target-using-armys-new-missile-defense-radar\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy missile intercepts target using Army\u2019s new missile defense radar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/techwatch\/2024\/04\/25\/raytheon-to-develop-two-standard-missile-types-with-better-targeting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Standard Missile-6<\/a>, guided by the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2023\/08\/09\/us-army-splits-testing-phase-of-future-missile-defense-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s new missile defense radar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/04\/12\/us-army-greenlights-key-battle-command-system-for-full-rate-production\/\" target=\"_blank\">command and control system<\/a>, intercepted a target in a recent test during Valiant Shield 24 in the Indo-Pacific, Raytheon announced in a July 18 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the test involving both physical hardware and simulation, the Army\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2022\/05\/02\/us-army-scrambles-to-keep-its-new-air-defense-radar-on-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Lower-Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor, or LTAMDS,<\/a> simulator provided threat tracking data, along with operational SM-6 engagement control software, to the service\u2019s Integrated Battle Command System, or IBCS, developed by Northrop Grumman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The successful test is the latest reflection of the Pentagon\u2019s desire to see the services operate seamlessly in battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IBCS, the brains of the Army\u2019s air and missile defense architecture, passed the data to initiate a launch command and guide the SM-6 to a \u201csuccessful\u201d intercept, according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Raytheon said the test proves that Navy missiles can work within the Army\u2019s integrated air and missile defense architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such a test also \u201cconfirms a viable option\u201d for U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, Tom Laliberty, company president of land and air defense systems, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLTAMDS matched with SM-6 adds an exceptional capability to defeat increasingly diverse and complex threats with a multi-mission missile that flies as far as the radar can see \u2013 providing for long range Army and Joint integrated air and missile defense,\u201d Laliberty said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort to integrate the Navy\u2019s long-range, anti-air missile that has a surface mode with Army missile defense systems could further builds out a layered missile defense architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/11\/06\/lockheed-martin-to-build-mid-range-missile-prototype-for-us-army\/\" target=\"_blank\">also using the SM-6 and Raytheon-built Tomahawk missiles paired with a vertical launch system <\/a>for its Mid-Range Capability, or MRC, weapon rapidly developed and deployed to fit in the Army\u2019s fires portfolio between its Precision Strike Munition, designed to hit targets over 500 kilometers away, and its ground-launched hypersonic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2024\/04\/16\/us-army-deploys-midrange-missile-for-first-time-in-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\"> service deployed the MRC to the Philippines earlier this year<\/a> as part of its annual Salaknib exercise with the island nation in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2019\/10\/17\/heres-who-will-build-the-armys-new-missile-defense-radar\/\" target=\"_blank\">LTAMDS <\/a>will serve as the radar in the Army\u2019s future Integrated Air and Missile Defense system. The Army fielded a LTAMDS battalion of four sensors in December as required by Congress, but the sensor is still in prototyping phase as the service works to integrate a back-end array to give the sensor a 360-degree tracking capability \u2013 an upgrade from the current Patriot sensor\u2019s ability to see all the way around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army plans to conduct an operational assessment in the first quarter of FY25 that will lead to an Engineering and Manufacturing Development decision in FY25, a preliminary step toward eventual serial production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test of the systems together is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/outlook\/2023\/12\/04\/us-faces-hurdles-next-year-for-guams-missile-defense-experts-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\">critical in ensuring the air and missile defense architecture planned for Guam<\/a> will work. The Army\u2019s MRC launchers, LTAMDS and IBCS will make up part of the architecture along with Aegis weapon systems equipped with SM-3 and SM-6
